Surprise, Arizona is a small town located in Mohave County, Arizona, about seventy-five miles northeast of Phoenix. It was founded in 1867 by James W. White and his family as the White Settlement. The post office was established in 1868 and renamed Surprise on July 4th of that year. In 1912 the city was incorporated and named after the nearby Surprise Canyon National Monument. In 1974 it became a county seat and has since grown to be a bustling community with over fifty thousand residents. The first knives made in Surprise were crude but effective tools used for skinning animals or guiding machetes through thick brush for subsistence agriculture. By 1895 an ad in the local newspaper advertised a knife competition held at the local schoolhouse where entrants could win either cash or goods from vendors. The winner received a fine piece of Damascus steel blade equal to three inches long with a six inch cutting edge and an ebony handle This type of knife would remain popular into the 20th century and continue to be produced today by various manufacturers including Spyderco, Leatherman, Cabela's, Gerber etc.. In 1907 The Lawrence brothers opened their own Knife Shop which quickly became one of the most well known knife shops in America due its wide variety of knives available at extremely reasonable prices as well as its high quality standards. They also pioneered what is now called "the sandwich" style folder which combined 5 1/2 inch blade length with 3 1/4 inch wide blade width making it ideal for slicing rather than hacking like traditional folders do. Many famous chefs such as Wolfgang Puck used theirShop blades exclusively for cooking instead of using general purpose knives like those typically offered at most grocery stores today

The Surprise knife company was founded in 1907 by Frank J. Laughlin, the son of a tailor and knife maker from western Pennsylvania. In 1912, Laughlin moved his business to Prescott, Arizona Territory and started production of knifes there. In 1915, he began manufacturing a unique type of blade known as the "Laughlin" or “Red Jacket”knife. The name comes from the red leather coverings used on many of his early knives. In 1919, Laughlin merged with another Knife Maker Company, Inc., producing what became known as the "Surprise" knife company. The first product produced by Surprise was an 8-inch carving knife called the "Hercules". This tool helped spur sales of other types of knives including foldingknives and hunting tools. In 1936, Surprise merged with two other Knife Maker Companies to form the "Surprise-Knife Manufacturing Co." which continued production until 1957 when it merged with Stevens Knives to form Stevens- SURPRISE Knives Incorporated

The name Surprise originated from an Apache Indian campsite that was situated near where the community now stands. The site was chosen because it was unusual and inaccessible to white settlers. In 1905, an irrigation project working in partnership with Gadsden County led to the discovery of coal deposits in what is now Surprise. With this new source of revenue, Surprise began to grow rapidly and by 1912 had become one of the most important towns in Gadsden County. The growth of Surprise was due in part to its location: close to both Phoenix and Flagstaff, it offered good opportunities for business and housing development. Businesses included several sugarcane plantations as well as some livestock farms, such as those run by George Wickersham. This boom period ended around World War II when production shifted towards munitions manufacturing – a decline that did not stop surprise from growing again until the late 1960s when it lost its status as an agricultural center due to changes in technology. Since then, however, there has been occasional growth through annexation by other communities or through economic development projects such as tourism initiatives or Mesquite-based petrochemical companies. Despite these challenges, surprise continues to enjoy strong support from its citizens who continue to maintain a presence within their community despite various challenges faced throughout its history

Surprise, Arizona is a small desert town located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was founded in 1912 by George C. Jester, who named it for his daughter's Scottish home of Auchtermilk. The name "Surprise" comes from a Sioux word meaning "the hidden place." The townsite that now occupies much of Surprise was first settled by Pima and Maricopa Indian tribes in the late 18th century. When the Mexican government ceded this area to the United States in 1848, most of the Native people were forced out and replaced with Anglo-Americans. In 1912, George C. Jester established an agricultural society here and named it after his daughter's Scottish home of Auchtermilk on the edge of what is now Surprise Valley. The nickname stuck and Surprise has grown steadily since then, becoming one of Chinle Citys most vibrant cities during its boom years in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1951, when Arizona became a state, Surprise joined other communities within Phoenix County in forming Peoria Township. As part of that process, land adjoining Surprise was annexed into Peoria Township from Apache Junction to form what is now known as Surprise Valley Ranchlands east of Interstate 805. Although boundaries have changed slightly over time - including annexing some adjacent neighborhoods - Surprise remains largely bounded by Interstate 805 to the north (east) and east (west) while portions extend into Tucson proper to the south and west (north). Over time, many new businesses have opened up around town due to its convenient location close to I-805/US 60/az 45; visitors can also enjoy plenty of cultural attractions like Museum District park just outside town or Chaparral Park located downriver on US 90 which offers views of Mt Saguaro National Monument as well as plenty of golf courses nearby for those looking for entertainment options as well!
