The first gun sling was designed by pioneer George Hafer in 1875. It consisted of a bamboo or other thin piece of wood that was fastened to the back of a large rock with an iron ring. The user would stand behind the rock and hold onto the end of the bamboo or other thin piece of wood with their hand while using their other hand to pull the ring across the ground until it reached the back of their opponent's head. To shoot, they would release the weight from their hand and use one arm to hold onto either side of their opponent's hair and use the other arm to pull them towards you, knocking them down. Gun Slings were used extensively throughout Surprise during its history and remain a popular recreational pastime today.

However, with increased visitation fromPhoenix and Tucson during later decades came pressure on Surprise's limited resources which led to increasing nosiness among visitors and a decline in visitation over time; today only a fraction of the population takes advantage of its unique tourist amenities available year-round due to skyrocketing costs associated with hosting such events outdoors rather than from within town limits. Although there have been some recent efforts by businesses owners within town boundaries to revive visitor numbers through marketing initiatives targeting out-of-towners living long distances away (e.g., providing shuttle service between local bars/restaurants/entertainment venues downtown during busy tourist season), overall it seems unlikely that either village will experience significant growth again until more environmentally mindful measures are put into place that take into account local needs before large visitors arrive here expecting things they cannot control (e.g., less pollution).
