The discovery of oil near Prescott increased production at Fort Craig and led to population growth in Surprise as well. After World War II, the military withdrew from the area and development stagnated until the late 1960s when a new shopping mall called Old Towne Plaza opened downtown. It quickly grew into one of the most popular tourist destinations in central Phoenix
