The city was founded on July 6, 1912 by mistake when Territorial Arizona Territory was divided into two parts: Surprise and Tombstone. The first town in what would become Surprise was called Happy Valley because many farmers there were happy with their new location. Even though it took many years for the area to develop as a thriving community, its boosters never stopped proclaiming that “surprise” would be its name. In 1928, the Mexican-American Treaty Commission convened at nearby Globe Hotel in Tucson to consider ways toAddress issues between Mexico and America following revolution in Mexico City. The treaty commissioners included local ranchers who had cattle ranches near Globe and recommended that Arizona Territory split into Cochise and Yuma Counties to avoid any potential problems stemming from cross-border traffic on Highway 10 (now Pima-Maricopa Streets). A year later,Surprise Valley received an official town letter from Coconino County Commissioner John Fenton stating that “the people of this place have waited long enough for something definite to happen about their situation & deserve better than what has been given them thus far." It wasn’t until 1942 when residents heard about Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor which caused America to enter World War II that they realized how important their town was going to be during wartime operations. When American forces invaded Japanese territory in late 1944 they discovered thousands of soldiers waiting for them just outside town limits – Surprise Valley became known as Battle Ground 1 due to its strategic importance! After the war ended, business picked up again as settlers brought back farms and businesses started up again including hotels/motels, restaurants etc., but things changed after September 11th 2001 when the economy cratered thanks mainly to recession across all regions across North America. In 1916, a post office was established in Surprise and within two years, the population had increased to seventy-five people. In 1924, an irrigation canal was built through Surprise and soon enough, there were fields full of crops and cattle. The early residents of Surprise enjoyed some of the best weather in all of Arizona because they had access to warm temperatures year round as well as good water resources which allowed for agriculture to be successful. Today, thanks to irrigation systems, development has occurred throughout Surprise including new businesses and residences. Today’s citizens are proud residents who have made their mark on history in this beautiful state. They continue to cherish their memories from past years as well as look forward to future opportunities here in Surprise Valley!
