Surprise, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. In 1914 the first post office was opened in Surprise and continued to serve until 1950 when it became an annex of Phoenix. The original town site lay within present-day Scottsdale on North Scottsdale Road east of Interstate 10 near Green Valley Ranch and Graham Village (now part of Peoria). A new town site was chosen for Surprise on November 12, 1912 by vote of the citizens as being best situated for trade with nearby Tombstone and Prescott because of its location at an intersection where both roads crossed the Gila River. The business district which included mills, warehouses, and other industries developed rapidly around this time; miners poured into Surprise to find rich ore deposits that had not been found elsewhere in Pinal County. By 1915 most of what is now Surprise had been built including a water tower (the first), two churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian), schools (including a high school which later became Arizona State University), post office building (opened October 14, 1914), baseball field (opened October 25th) - all while construction continued on what would become Bridalveil Mines Company's $1 million nickel mine soon to be named after wife Alice Aiken Baker who served as treasurer during that time; she also provided financial assistance to help build the millrace leading into the mine which created ample water sources for operations; today's shopping center/mall has been constructed on land once occupied by millrace and some buildings from earlier days remain along North Scottsdale Road. The citys population grew rapidly during World War I when local businesses produced supplies for troops fighting overseas; production peaked in 1919 with 1,500 workers employed at three plants producing 100 tons per day; however due to defaults on contract payments by suppliers war ended before any significant quantities were producible. After mining the area for several years, he found no gold but did find some silver and copper ore. He renamed his discovery Surprise because it was so close to where he had first found the metal. The railroad arrived in 1911 and soon replaced wagon trains as the means of transportation in the area; business boomed as people transported goods to and from nearby mines. In 1916, when World War I began, war production increased in Arizona and jobs were needed at nearby military bases; Surprise became one of these areas. After World War II ended, business boomed again thanks to new technologies such as plastics and aluminum production; however, violence continued to increase throughout the 1950s due to crime rates high enough for a small town like Surprise to become known as an unsafe place to live. In 1957 voters passed a resolution calling on their state legislators to pass a law banning handguns; this led to an increase in security measures at local stores and businesses after many residents saw firearms being used as weapons against rival gangs outside of their homes. By 1975surprise had reached its current size with nearly 2200 residents living within its borders In 2002 Surprising's mayor vetoed plans by city council membersto build a shopping mall on Main Street adjacent to Old Coin Mines Casino; instead they built two churches instead which have been home to SURPRISE CHURCH AND MUSEUM since 2002 On November 3rd 2006 SURPRISE CITY COUNCIL VOTED TO GROW UP THE GAS STATION INTO A COMMUNITY CENTER WITH STORES FOR THE PUBLIC AND MUCH MORE! The citizens ofsurprise are going along with this idea Plan because they want their city center back! This will bring much needed tax money into our city coffers so we can continue growing without any cuts!

The town was founded by a group of Mormons led by Brigham Young and it quickly became a busy cattle and sheep ranching center. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved to Surprise from Window Rock and the first mail service arrived in 1917. By 1923, the population had reached 4,000 and new shops and businesses opened up including a bank and grocery store. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II as soldiers stationed in nearby Phoenix sent money back home to their families for goods they needed while on military duty. In 1949, when statehood was granted to Arizona, Surprise became part of the newly formed county located within present-day Phoenix.
