A fire destroyed much of downtown Tucson on December 14th 2007 during the Christmas season causing extensive damage to property including what is now known as "The Plaza". As redevelopment continued into 2008-2009 more businesses were added to The Plaza such as Sears Holdings Craftsman store which reopened on November 15th 2009 after being closed for over two years due to structural problems with its building following a 2002 arson attack which left $25 million worth of goods inside; this also marked Sears first major physical return since bankruptcy protection less than two years earlier prior to that date On January 11th 2010 another large fire destroyed much buildings along First Street between 5th Ave & 6th Ave NW near US 95 - displacing more than 100 people including 50 children who lost their homes & school supplies while firefighters battled multiple structures burning for hours; this again marking one year since 9/11/2009 when significant fires ravaged numerous neighborhoods across Phoenix & Tucson resulting in loss or destruction totaling some 150+ homes/schools around both cities
