Somerton, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The name "Somerton" comes from Spanish and means "settlement." The town was founded in 1907 by settlers who came from Mexico and were looking for a place to farm. In 1912, the first post office was established in Somerton. The community grew rapidly after World War I when many farmers moved to Somerton because of the new irrigation systems being developed in that area. The population peaked at 6,000 in 1960 but has since declined slightly. Today, Somerton has a fewer than 50 residents and most of its citizens are retirees or students living on campus at nearby Tuscon Community College or US Airways Airport. The local economy is based on agriculture and tourism. There are several farms near Somerton which offer hay, eggs, crops, cattle and other services to the local market. There are also several restaurants and shops located in the town center which serve food items such as Mexican restaurant El Paso de Ojo de la Tortuga (or Eye of the Turtle) tacos with chardjal sauce and queso fresco, as well as hamburgers from Joe's Local Hamburger fame; ice cream from Donut Shop; gift shop; post office; civic center; public library; cemetery; individual homes for sale or rent (the longest list goes back to 1915); and four churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1909), Second Baptist Church (opened 1911), Methodist EpiscopalChurch (1911), Pentecostal Church(2005). There are two schools in Somerton: one serving pre-kindergarten through eighth grade along with relatedelementary school grades nine through twelve while another serves high school students up until he/she finishes college or reachestwenty-one years old while still others serve middle school students through seventh grade along with relatedelementary school grades six through eight

In 1886, railroad workers built a station here and named it after their hometown of Sonoma, California. In 1927, the Arizona Mining and Manufacturing Company (AMC) opened an open-pit copper mine in what is now Somerton. This mining operation produced over 100 million pounds of copper ore and left a lasting legacy on the community: Over 5 miles of pipeline remain today to convey water used for processing copper ore out to nearby wells. The AMC Mine closed in 1984 and has been abandoned ever since; however, some artifacts from this mine have been preserved as part of Somerton's history Museum. Today, Somerton is home to many businesses that are based on aluminum production or research & development activities related thereto including Alcoa Aluminum Co., BrightStar Inc., Diamond Plate Technologies LP (DPT), Pinnacle Power Solutions LLC., Symantec Corporation’s Dataquest division and United States Steel Corporation’s Regions Service Center (RSC). These operations generate more than 2,000 jobs within close proximity to each other across five campuses totaling over 236 acres - making Somerton one of America’s most vibrant industrial communities.
Somerton was founded in 1886 by John P. Somerville and his wife, Mabel. The settlement was located on the banks of the Verde River, about a mile west of present-day Somerton. By 1888, the population of Somerton had reached 10 residents. In 1893, a post office called Somerton was established at the site; it remained in operation until 1912. The townspeople built their first school in 1896. A water tower and pump Station were erected in 1907 and 1908, respectively, to provide town infrastructure with reliable water supply. One of the first businesses in the town was a grocery store operated by Mrs. Lillian Green from 1903 to 1906; it is now known as First National Bank of Somerton. In 1911, former Arizona state senator Harry Reid bought property adjacent to what is now First National Bank for $30,000; he developed it into a subdivision which became known as Reid Park. The Reid Park School was constructed in 1915 and remains operational today as one of the most popular schools in Somerton.
