Somerton was founded in 1887 by John and Emma Grey. The Grey family operated the grocery store for many years before selling it to a local pharmacist, Wm. J. MacNeill, in 1916. In 1926, the A & P grocery store was built on the site of the original grey store. The A & P Store continued to be a part of Somerton until it closed in 1984.
