The name "Somerton" is a corruption of Spanish words meaning "sleepy place." The first earmuffs were made in Somerton by Earhart and Fenton in 1907. They were made from cotton and had no sound insulation. These earmuffs were not very popular because they did not fit well and caused hearing loss after long periods of use.
