It is located on the eastern edge of Mohave County and borders Coconino National Forest to the east. The first people to arrive in Somerton were Yaqui Native Americans. They hunted and trapped in the area for many years before406 AD when Spain discovered what they were doing and began missionary work among them. In 1881, US military forces attacking Apache Indians killed 11 Yaqui men, women and children as they slept near present-day Somerton. Spanish settlers arrived in 1882 with about 100 people and built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the creek that now forms Somerton's main street, called "the Adobe." A post office was established here in 1887. The first school opened here in 1889. The town name comes from Spanish "soma" (corn) because of its location on the site of an old cornfield where Indian corn had been stockpiled during winter months to be sold at low prices to traders on Tucson's missions
