The community was founded in 1907 by Italian immigrants. Somerton had one post office from 1907 to 1912 and two from 1913 to 1916. It changed its name to Somerville in 1916 and became an incorporated town in 1922. In 1940, it had 3 inhabitants and 9 businesses. The population declined to 897 in 2000 and 1,684 as of the 2010 census. Somerton is located at (33.837902, -111.524663). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,684 people residing in the town: 703 men and 596 women; 0 families (zero children under 18 years old). Of these 1,684 residents 78% were white while 22% were Latino or Hispanic origin; 2% were Native American; 2% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 0% from other races or ethnicities. Somerton is a small town in Arizona, located about 33 miles east of the state capital, Phoenix. The population was 1,513 at the 2010 census. The settlement began as a cattle drive on July 2, 1870 by W.H. Duffield and his brother-in-law J.C. Goodwin from Prescott across Frome Valley to what is now Somerton after they discovered an abandoned ranch there. The first permanent resident of Somerton was John Cavanaugh who arrived in 1872. In 1901, the name of the town was changed to honor General William Tecumseh Sherman's visit to that area in that year which helped promote agricultural growth in the area until World War I when much of the local infrastructure was destroyed by war efforts and military occupation including destruction of many homes and businesses. In 1927, Somerton became part of Roosevelt County when it was created from parts of Yuma County and Mohave County following Statehood legislation passed by Arizona's first Republican governor James Farley on November 3, 1912 (). After years of being unincorporated within Roosevelt County, it incorporated as a city on January 1, 1959 under then- Mayor Harry Herrington with a population exceeding 5500 people (). As part of its incorporation process, Somerton also renamed itself as "Phoenix" for symbolic reasons due to its location just outside the eastern edge of Phoenix City Limits (). Today's downtownBurbank has been largely unchanged since it opened in 1959 despite continual growth throughout Phoenix; even today portions near Central Avenue are still undeveloped while areas closer to Interstate 10 have seen some significant development such as Mesa Hills Shopping Center (opened 1999), Sunburst Plaza (opened 2001) and Wells Fargo Field (opened 2006). Growth rates have slowed over time but continue to increase along major arterials such as Central Avenue where several high-end restaurants have opened up including Zuka Turkish restaurant (2006), Prezo Italian restaurant (2007) and Joe's Pizza & Pasta restaurant (2009). Development along greater stretches such as Scottsdale Road has been more sporadic with only two notable developments - Lennar Homes subdivision off Scottsdale Road south of Central Avenue which opened in 2009 and Vista Ridge Apartments off East Camelback Road which opened in early 2013 - both without any accompanying job or housing demand attributable thereto although there has been discussion among developers about developing these areas into mixed use/residential/commercial corridors with possibly additional retail or office space available beyond current development boundaries should future market demand warrant such expansion
