The 1920s were a time of growth for Somerton as well with construction of schools, churches, businesses and a few homes becoming residents. In 1948, Somerton incorporated as a village. During the late 1800s and early 1900s there were many Mormon settlers in central Pinal County This area became known as "the Mormon Ghetto." Many Mormons left CentralArizona because they were not welcome there because they did not believe in polygamy or other religious beliefs that were seen as acceptable by some people on the east side of Pinal County which included Phoenix

Somerton, Arizona is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area that has served as a stop on the Old Wagon Road since the 1860s. The first permanent settler in Somerton was James A. Donnellan, who arrived in 1869 and built a cabin on what is now the northeast corner of Fourth Street and Wadsworth Avenue. In 1875, Donnellan's son-in-law, John P. Hildebrandt, purchased land to the east of his father-in-law's property and began to build a farmstead known as "Hildebrandt's." Hildebrandt initially cultivated corn, cotton, and other crops but soon realized that he could not continue to do so without irrigation water from nearby Fountain Hills (now Mesa). He contracted with George Fenton to provide this water service. From 1889 until 1905, when it became part of PHX City Water District #2 through its acquisition by Arizonas public Utilities Commission (PUC), Somerton had its own municipally run water system which delivered potable water to homes and businesses. AfterPHXCityWaterDistrict#2 was sold by PUC to city government for $1 million in 1969,[1] Somerton joined city government as an unincorporated community within Phoenix.[2] In 1916,[3] William Sprague Hatcher bought 4 acres (16 ha) of land at what is now First Street and Wadsworth Avenue for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare).[4] Hatcher used this tract of land for grazing his sheep while he developed farming methods which would later be patented[5][6] and named after him: Sprague Hatchery Farming Systems Limited (SHFSL). hatchery operations began in 1923[7], becoming one of the largest operators of their kind in North America. At their peak production there were up to twelve hatcheries working across twenty states; however, due to limited resources,[8][9] SHFSL filed for bankruptcy protection twice between 1984–1985[10][11]. By 2006 hatchery operations had ceased completely within Arizona following a fire that destroyed much equipment including three hundred head of sheep fifty miles away at Bighorn Ranch near Winslow; however these remnants have been preserved under storage conditions at Mesa Verde National Park since 1993. These hats are currently being digitized using museum data management software.[12][13] The history of Somerton goes back even further than this – according to oral traditions passed down by early settlers there were people living here before they arrived in Arizona. One story tells how two brothers came across some Indian artifacts while traveling through Sonora County on their way home from trading goods with the Native Americans. When they presented these artifacts to their family back east they were surprised that no one wanted them because no one had ever seen anything like them before! Eventually word spread about these objects throughout westernArizona so somebody must have found them because eventually someone created something out of nothing happened here!
