Somerton is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The name "Somerton" is derived from Spanish words meaning "little settlement." The first settlers arrived in 1885 and named their community after Somerville, England. The post office was established in 1886 and the first store was built in 1889. In 1951, the community changed its name to Somerton because it had acquired more locals by then who wanted to be known as one entity. The Pomona-Strawberry School District served Somerton until 2007 when they merged into Phoenix Unified School District. The original land that made up Somerton was granted by Mexican president Santa Anna to José Vasquez in 1841 for his rancho de las Palomas which included present day Somerton and parts of Houghton Mesa and Mogollon Hills. In 1885 Joshua Larkin donated 640 acres (247 hectares) of this property east of Highway 66 for $5 per acre payable over five years with an extra payment if title wasn't claimed within that time frame; this donation formed the nucleus around which development took place near what is now Somerton Elementary School and Community Center on Mohawk Drive today. This land also includes a portion of present-day Apache Road where most early businesses were located including the old White Sands Dam site on the bottomlands east of Mohawk Drive today according to oral history recordings from those days preserved by Mrs. Florence Hsulda during her lifetime as well as other oral historians interviewed since then preservation efforts have resulted in portions of these structures being moved or restored/remodeled several times throughout recent years so it can once again serve as an active local heritage center/parking lot combination incorporating both Federal period architecture components typical for these types locations while still remaining historically accurate given current conditions). Today there are only a few buildings left with out much evidence remaining about their function or use other than what has been documented through oral histories etcetera however there remain some nice examples like...the old white sands dam site mentioned earlier just beyond Apache road across Mohawk drive from where Mrs . Florence Hsulda's memories tell us that prior thereto there used to be extensive farming & cattle grazing operations taking place...... village hall (built 1915), school (1916), post office (1886), livery stable/smithy(1889), grocery store/bakery (1951), Red Cross ambulance station housed inside Village Hall later renamed Pediatric Clinic following fellow volunteer work by numerous individuals who responded to injuries suffered during World War II....... latterly used as storage building until demolition initiated in 2007....... There are many contributing factors including...the fact that there were many Anglo Americans living here at various points throughout its history............. readily available housing nearby................. easy access to transportation.......friendly locals.............multiple cultural events taking place each year..................... considerable amount of historical documentation extant.................. late 19th century technological advances such as photography................. resulting growth............................ societal changes associated with automobiles

Somerton is a small town in Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1902 by the Donners as a wagon stop on the Mogollon Rim Trail. The name "Somerton" was derived from Spanish for "salt spring." The post office at Somerton was established in 1903, and remained in operation until it closed in 1959. The first store in Somerton opened in 1907. By 1912, the town had a population of about 30 people. In 1926, the Donners built an addition to their home that became known asthe Donner House. They continued to live there until they died in 1982. During World War II, Somerton served as a supply depot for the 8th Air Force Base at nearby Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. After the war, the town lost much of its business vitality due to changes in transportation methods and competition from more recent arrivals such as Phoenix and Tucson. However, since 1975 Somerton has experienced growth through tourism which has helped support its economy today.
