In 1888, John Fenton erected a frame house on what is now Main Street in Somerton. He was one of the early settlers here and later served as Mayor from 1903 to 1905. Mrs. Fenton was one of the first women ever elected to public office in Arizona when she won election as a Democrat to represent District 6A (now Pima County) on November 4, 1903. In 1916 he married his second wife Alma May Swenson; they lived until his death in 1978 at age 96 years old. They had four children: two daughters Reva Mae Fenton (born 1923), Donald Yates (born 1926), Lynn Swenson (born 1932), and Barbara Ann Fenton (born 1945). Annie Augusta Haggerty was born December 12th 1888 at home near present day Adobe Walls Road about three miles south of where Somerton now stands - just east off US-60 Exit 283B towards Apache Junction - daughter oliver Haggerty married Eldon Sargeant on March 11th 1921 UTAH nativity record book 2 page 21 GSWSE Territorial Boundaries Note: According to Annie Augusta's obituary published by Phoenix Gazette dated September 3rd 1935 she died aged 83 yrs 9 mos after a long life spent with her husband Eldon & their son Oliver

Somerton was founded in 1911 by George and Florence Somerton. The town served as a post office from 1912 to 1916, and then became a railroad town. The first train to arrive in Somerton was the Santa Fe Railway on November 3, 1912. In 1925, the Southern Arizona Railroad reached Somerton from Apache Junction. The railroad closed in 1981, but the depot remained intact until it burned down in 1984.
