In 1886, Harry Hays founded the Hays Grain Elevator here which housed one of the first grocery stores in Phoenix. In 1916, Harry Hays and his brother-in-law W.C. King bought land on which they built the Somerton High School campus now known as Valley View Elementary School; it opened its doors to students on November 3rd, 1916. On July 5th, 1920,[3][4] somerton became an incorporated village with a mayor and village council.[5] In 1928 Pioneers of America erected a monument to their forefathers that stands near the old post office at Elm Street and Mohawk Road (now Mohawk Drive).[6] The Monument honors all Native Americans who made sacrifices for their country during World War I and World War II including: Hiram Soria (1847 - 1922), Charles Goodyear (1869 – 1942), George Humphreys (1875 - 1951), Clyde “Digger” Dawson (1901 – 1989) and Raymond Hendrickson (1920 -). Additionally, Somerton has a post office (Logan), two churches (First Baptist Church and Christ United Methodist Church), a school (Albuquerque Unified School District #1), an auto dealership (Ford-Chrysler), a grocery store (Pepsi-Cola Company) and several businesses including gas stations ( Chevron ), restaurants ( Pizza Hut , Tom's Place ) and taverns ( Red Lodge ).
Somerton was founded in 1887 by James G. Somerville and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the somerfield cattle ranch that was located about six miles to the east of the town. The first store in Somerton opened in 1889. In 1912, a post office was established in Somerton, and it remained open until 1959. In 1927, a school was built in Somerton. It remains active today and serves as the primary educational institution in the town.
