All of these exports stopped once communism ended because different governments had their own restrictions on what type of weaponry they would allow into their country.(Boydell)

The town was named for John A. Somerville, an American Indian who served as a military scout and guide during the Mexican–American War. In 1895, due to railroad construction through Apache County, settlers came to Somerton from all over southern Arizona to see what would be available on their new land. Most of these people were farmers who grew crops such as corn, beans, wheat and cotton. However, some men set up businesses in town such as a grocery store and post office. One of these businessmen was Wm Henson who operated the business until his death in 1925. Other early residents of Somerton were Mr. & Mrs J D Matson who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1915; Roy Sibley who started a general store on East Second Street in 1916; Harry Troup (1891-1982) who established what is now White Sands Resort & Casino near Interstate 10; and Leroy Beardsley (1906-1986) who founded Beardsley's Drug Store on Main Street in 1935 In 1940 Somerton had 1 post office which opened with mail from Pharr City westward In 1945 there were 3 post offices open including one which opened with mail from Flagstaff eastward In 1951 there were 7 post offices open including one which opened with mail from Peoria eastward In 1990 there were 11 post offices open including one which opened with mail from Phoenix northward
