The history of Somerton, Arizona begins with the arrival of the American forces in 1864. The area was part of Mexico and was under Spanish control at that time. In 1868, the US acquired Oklahoma from Mexico and appointed General James A. Garfield as its first president. The US-Mexico War began in 1880 and ended in 1883. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded most of Texas to Mexico but left Arizona unceded. In 1912, a group of settlers named the Wright brothers landed on what is now Mesa Verde National Park in Arizona and started a cattle ranch there. The ranching industry boomed in Arizona during the 1920s and 1930s due to easy access to water supplies, good land for farming, and cheap labor from Native Americans. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802 which ordered all Mexican nationals living inAZ to be deported without anyoses or other forms of punishment if they could not provide evidence that they were citizens of their own country. This led to a large number of Mexican immigrants being brought overland into AZ by buses or trains and placed into camps near Phoenix until they could be processed by authorities back home. As a result, much of Somerton's early history has been lost to history because many people who lived there were either too afraid or too ashamed to speak about it publicly."
Somerton is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 527 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tucson–Mesa–Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Somerton was James Wiers who built a cabin on an abandoned mesa in 1868. Wiers named his settlement after himself and his wife, Sarah Snively. By 1875, there were 10 residents living in somerton and it had a post office with one name only- "Somerville". In 1880, the US Post Office moved to its present site at Third Street and Hermosa Avenue. The original schoolhouse burned down in 1893 but was rebuilt and renamed the Somerville School District Building before it closed in 1970. In 1912, John Hines platted what would become Somerton on land that he had bought from Manuel Olivas for $10 cash plus 6 horses and 4 pigs. At that time there were just four homes in town- two of them being used as stores which opened up shortly afterwards when the first telephone line went into service. Hines named his new community after himself (John Hines) because he believed that “everybody has something to give” including land ownership and business opportunities for hometown natives like himself. Today, John Hines Park still stands across from Main Street as a reminder of this early Pioneer Days period of growth and success for Somerton! The first post office opened up here on March 7th1893 with Elisha Dibble as the initial employee serving Santa Fe Springs until 1901 when Mrs Fenton took over operations due to illness or death of her predecessor Mrs Dibble (Fenton later became known as Lady Bird Johnson). Between 1902-1912 there were three owners/employees of this post office; Jerald Bowersock, Hiram Weeks & Sallie Weems prior to opening their own businesses within walking distance: A Girdersmith store located at Seventh Street & Mohawk Road; Valley Glass Works located at Second Street & Hermosa Avenue; & finally Mrs Fenton’s home located at Fourth Street & Mohawk Road where she ran the post office until her retirement on December 31st 1912 when operation transferred to San Francisco due to increased postage rates back east while also discontinuing mail delivery services between Phoenix AND Tucson! After both women retired……………………………………….. Somerton is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 534 at the 2000 census. It was founded by pioneers in 1907 and named after the Somerton Rancho Viejo grant which was given to Clifton Wilkinson by President Theodore Roosevelt. Somerton is located on the eastern edge of Pinal County and is bordered by Mohave County to the north, Gila County to the east, and Cochise County to the south. The first settlers arrived in 1907 and began construction of a cabin on what would later be known as the Somerton Rancho Viejo Grant. By 1912, there were six families living in Somerton and three businesses were operating: a grocery store, a bakery, and a sawmill. In 1916, community members voted to name their town after Clifton Wilkinson who had donated land for it. The first post office opened in 1925 and remained open until it closed in 1990. At that time, there were only 20 residents living in Somerton with an average of two meals per day being provided from local production quotas set by county officials. In 1954, Pinal County voters passed an ordinance allowing for Chevrolet trucks on public roads within its boundaries. This led to increased traffic congestion within the small town which caused many homes to be replaced with new structures over the next few years; however, no major changes took place until 1980 when ZIP code 82834 was created when most of northern Pinal County became part of Glendale city limits
