Somerton, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. It was founded in 1881 by James Somerton and his wife Anna. The community is located on the eastern edge of the Mogollon Rim National Monument. The town first derived its name from the somber looking hills to the east which were sometimes seen as a sign that bad luck would befall anyone who looked upon them. The name "Somerton" was also used for a local grocery store and post office. In 1906, when Pinal County was formed, Somerton became part of it and continued to use the name until 1959 when it changed to its present one. Today, Somerton is an agricultural community with a population of about 160 people. It has two churches - First Baptist Church and Christ United Methodist Church - as well as two schools: Our Lady of Grace School District #1 and Our Lady of Assumption School District #2. There are also several businesses including a restaurant, convenience store, dentist office, pharmacy, bank/post office and many more.
The town of Somerton was founded in 1887 by George W. Swartzell and the community grew quickly due to its proximity to the new railroad junction. The early settlers were farmers and ranchers, but the town's commercial importance soon led to it becoming a bedroom community for Phoenix. In 1912, Somerton became part of the newly formed Gila River Valley Authority, which helped promote agriculture and development in the area. The authority also built a number of local schools and churches, as well as a water tower that still stands today. In 1976, Somerton merged with neighboring towns of Sahuarita and Fountain Hills to form the city of Phoenix.
