The settlers named the place "Somerton" after one of their own number, Samuel Ormsby Somerville (1807–1898), who had been instrumental in helping them find and purchase their land. In 1881, there were only 10 people living in Somerton; by 1890 it had grown to more than 200 people thanks to nearby irrigation projects and ranching operations run by ranchers and farmers who took advantage of natural resources such as water hemlock and oak trees that grew plentifully near the mesa. By 1900, Somerton boasted a post office, three churches (one Lutheran, one Methodist Episcopal and one Baptist), two schools (grades K-12th grade), four businesses (three general stores and one bank), six residences - twelve out of twenty residents being farmers - seven banks with over $5 million in assets - including two branches of First National Bank - three newspapers - two schoolhouses - five churches - ten shops - fifteen restaurants – thirteen public works crews – thirty-six men working on farms or ranching efforts – seventy-eight men employed at government agencies or businesses During World War II many Somertons joined forces with other towns located around Tucson to form "Tucson Air Transport Squadron No. 4," flying B-29 Superfortresses raiders over Japan dropping supplies and troops during Operationrendezvous/Admiral Nagumo's sneak attack against Tokyo on 12 September 1945 which resulted in Japan's surrender

The town's growth came during the 1920s when it became an agricultural center with many farmers buying property to grow crops. In the 1930s, Somerton began to experience population growth due to its location on Tucson's fringe and its access to irrigation water from the river below. By 1940, there wereoversixty homes in Somerton and it had a population of over one hundred people. However, World War II caused Somerton's economy to decline as many of its farmers left for military service. After the war, population growth slowed as people returned to their farms or businesses. In 1970, however, SOMERTON-AZ again experienced population growth due to annexations from other towns in Tucson County during Phoenix Mayor Phil Romer's master plan for annexation which increased density along arterial streets in central Tucson
Somerton was founded in 1912 by John and Lillie Somerton. The village is named after the somberon tree, which is found in the immediate area. The Somertons operated a small store and post office until 1916 when they started to build a larger facility. They built a three-story building that still stands today. The town grew rapidly during World War I due to the influx of soldiers and their families. In 1923, the Somertons donated land for a new high school which served local students from pre-K through 12th grades. In 1937, they donated another parcel of land for a junior high school. In 1959, they donated another parcel of land for an elementary school which continued to serve local students until 1978 when it was closed due to budget cuts.
