Somerton, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,953 as of the 2010 census. Somerton is known for its citrus groves and warm climate. The economy is based largely on agriculture and ranching. The first settlers in Somerton were Italian immigrants who arrived in 1881. They built a log cabin on the present site of Somerton High School. In 1902, the United States purchased part of Rancho Santa Fe from Juan Bautista Ortiz de Alburquerque and established the U.S.-Mexico Land Grant Program to give American farmersholds throughout Mexico land that they could develop into productive farms or ranchers’ estates. In 1906, Pomona College moved to Somerton from Tucson and opened its doors to students from all over America; however, it was not until 1916 that a post office was established at Somerville with Gertrude Atherton as the first mail carrier. In 1912, Agnes Goodger married Clem Goodger, an insurance salesman from Phoenix and together they started a grocery store at 137 N Main Street which became one of the largest businesses in town after World War I ended. During World War II, Donny Hathaway served as an airman with the 332nd Fighter Group flying Spitfires out of nearby Tucson Airport; he died while serving his country in 1945 when his aircraft crashed near Mogollon Lake south of Sedona. Consequently, much of what is now downtown Somerville was developed during this time including most notably Hathaway Park which honors him today by naming one block in his memory Streetsboro Drive after him (though street signage still indicates "Donny Hathaway Boulevard"). Somerton is a small town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,658 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1912 by John Dvorak and his family. Dvorak had come from Slovakia and wanted to find a place where he could farm his land and raise cattle. He found a piece of land that would allow him to do just that and named the settlement Somerton after himself. The first post office opened in Somerton on January 1, 1913. In 1916, the Santa Fe Railway built a line through Somerton, making it possible for people to reach the rest of the city more easily. The railroad also brought new businesses into town, such as an hotels and a grocery store. In 1925, Somerton became an incorporated village under the name of Apache City. On July 7, 1928, it merged with neighbouring Payson to form Somerville Village again under its original name of Apache City-Payson Township No 1 (later renamed Payson). On October 1st of that year Apache Junction was annexed into Somerville Village as well due to growing population densities within both villages combined; however all local government activity ceased effective November 15th 1923 when incorporation proceedings were transferred from Apache City-Payson Township No 1 to Apache Junction Municipal Court #1 effective December 21st 1923 because there were no active residents or officials remaining therein.) On May 3rd 1942 during World War II much like many other small towns throughout America somerton came under attack by Japanese forces during their Operation Swatow which resulted in about 100 citizens being killed along with most of their livestock including horses and cows) Treaty negotiations between USA & Japan began on February 17th 1945 resulting in Japan withdrawing its forces from Manus Island & returning all civilians back home while still holding control over Samoa (a New Zealand territory) thus ending US involvement there)
