In 1912, the town was platted and named after Halsey Pomona Dodge Sr., who donated land for it. After Dodge's death in 1928, the Town Council voted to adopt the name somerville after him but reverted back to its original name upon his widow's death two years later In response to increasing tourism activity in Pima County during the early 21st century, Somerton developed an economy around outdoor recreation and hospitality services such as camping and fishing rights along Withy Creek Reservoirs adjacent to its borders with adverse effects on their water quality which led to several lawsuits filed by individuals over this matter since 2006.. After much public outcry and negotiation between state agencies (including Forest Service) and local governments culminating with passage of House Bill 1068 which allowed opening of up Toole Lake National Recreation Area east of town limits effective January 1st 2020; more than $5 million have beenraised towards environmental projects that will negatively impact these areas including construction/maintaining dam capacity; restoring hunting access within town limits while still allowing commercial use thereof; & improvements made near intersection off I-10 provide some measure against negative impacts from development

The community was founded by Mormon settlers in 1881 and has since experienced numerous waves of migration, including Hispanics and Native Americans. Somerton's history can be traced back to 1881, when Mormon settlers arrived in what is now Arizona. The Mormons were looking for land to establish their own kingdom and found the area they called Utah Valley. They began construction on a small settlement, which they named Somerton after one of their members, Samuel Morrison. The first residents of Somerton were men from the nearby mining town of Globe, Arizona. By 1902, the population had increased to twenty-one people and the town grew even more during World War I when it became a military base. In 1920, the United States Postal Service moved its main office from Globe to Somerville; at that time, it was the only post office in Arizona with its own ZIP code. In 1941, during World War II, part of Globe was destroyed by an atomic bomb explosion; as a result, Somerville became an unincorporated community once again. However, due to its ties to Globe and its cultural significance to many people in those days (particularly Hispanic immigrants), Somerton continued to be inhabited until 1991 when it finally went into effect as an incorporated municipality within the newly createdMohave County.[1] The Village Council organized itself into a board of directors in 1984 and purchased property east of Interstate 10 for incorporation purposes;[2] this allowed for more efficient operations due to better communication between village officials and larger county officials.[3] As an incorporated municipality within Mohave County,[4] Somerton enjoyed all local governmental rights and privileges not available unto any other unincorporated community within Mohave County saveing annexation by Glendale Heights in 2002;[5][6][7][8][9][10] however annexation did not bring about any substantive changes as compared to previous government structure though some new programs have been put into place such as health care services through Scottsdale Healthcare District #1 which covers both portions of Phoenix suburbs annexed by Glendale Heights including Maricopa Hills annexed via Tempe on 1/25/2013
Somerton was founded in 1912 by the McDowell brothers, who named it for John Somerville, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1914. The town grew rapidly during World War I, with a population of over 100 people. However, the war brought hard times to the community and its residents. In 1919, the McDowell Brothers donated land to create a city, which they called Somerton City. The city began to grow rapidly and reached its peak in the 1950s. However, due to economic conditions and declining population growth, Somerton City fell apart in the early 1960s. Today, little remains of Somerton City other than a few abandoned buildings and some remnant archives.
