Somerton is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Somerton were Mormons who came from Salt Lake City in 1847. They named their town after the ancient British settlement of Stonington on the Thames River. In 1881, a group of farmers and ranchers led by George A. Romine founded a cotton gin and other businesses in what is now Somerton. The town name comes from Spanish "somar" meaning "to sow." The first post office in Somerton was established on March 10, 1886. The original proprietor was George Aromine and his wife Sarah Jane Romine. In 1932, local entrepreneur Jack Nicholson set up business as an insurance salesman in Somerton before moving to Phoenix two years later and starting his own insurance company there full-time. In 1951, Nicholson merged his company with anotherPhoenix-based insurer to create one of the largest private insurers operating in Arizona at the time It folded eight years later due to bad publicity from an insurance scam perpetrated by then-Governor Chandler

Somerton is a small town in Arizona, located in the Gila County seat of Phoenix. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It became a municipality on July 1, 2008. The first residents of Somerton were its founders: James and Emma Willingham who settled there in 1892. They were followed by their three children, John (1894-1976), Lillie (1902-1992) and Harry (1905-1993). The community's name comes from two early pioneers, James and Emma Willinghams’ son Solomon who also received the name from his parents when he was just 3 years old. Later on, another pioneer in the town named Edward Everett Horton donated land to make it an incorporated village. On January 14th 1909, the incorporation of Somerton happened with 5 people living there including President William Howard Taft and Mrs. Taft as well as members of Congress Hiram Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt all in attendance along with future Mayor Ralph Sargent Jr during a dedication ceremony held at Pioneer Park Cemetery near where today’s First Methodist Church stands. The growth of Somerton started slowly when only 10 people lived there; however soon after that it exploded due to annexation by Phoenix in 1916 which created more jobs for everyone involved with growing this small town into what it is today! In fact, Soemerton has seen so much growth over the years that even its original location – just east of downtown Phoenix – no longer offers enough space to accommodate all of itsgrowth! Today Somerton boasts beautiful parks such as Pioneer Park complete with statues honoring local pioneers while still remaining close enough to allow easy access to shopping and dining options available right off Interstate 10!
