The history of Somerton, Arizona starts with the arrival of Mexicans in 1848. The town was founded by José María Sánchez and his wife Mercedes de la Cruz, who came from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. They named their settlement after the Somerton Rancho that they owned in northern Chihuahua. In 1870, a group of American ranchers established a rancho on the present-day site of Somerton. The ranch was abandoned in 1881 when the stock became too valuable to hold. In 1912, attorney and politician George W. Peña moved to Somerton from Tucson and started a law practice there. He served as mayor from 1925 to 1927 and as governor from 1928 to 1930. In 1938, Don Manuel Arroyo purchased the original Rancho del Llano for $1 million dollars. He used it as his private estate until he died in 1959; then it passed into trust for his son Fernando Arroyo Jr.. It was sold again in 1984 to real estate developer Ray Foley for $25 million dollars.
Somerton, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is named after Somerton, England. The first permanent settler in Somerton was Captain John Atherton who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Somerton and named it Atherton's Fort. In 1850 he married Sarah Lewis and their children came to live here. They raised chickens, hogs, pigs and cattle until 1865 when the Chisholm Trail opened up and they had to move again because of the newroversy there. The post office was established at Somerton on May 15, 1865 by WIlliam Haddad with Gershom Fenton serving as clerk. The first postmaster was George Waddell who served from 1867-1872 . Mrs Haddon closed the post office in 1870 because she could not keep up with mail delivery due to her husband's death before that date. There have been several changes hands since then with only one occupant being registered during 2009-2010: David Sanger (2004-2009). At this time there are just three residences in Somerton—all dating back to before World War II: Summit House (1902), Secondhand Store (1915), and Eben's house (1920). One of the founding members of the Pima County Historical Society was Mrs Haddon’s granddaughter Alice Sanger; she became president from 1984-1986. Somerton, Arizona is a small town in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. The population was 573 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. Somerton was founded in 1907 by John and Lillie Dyer and named after nearby Somerville, Massachusetts. The Post Office at SOMERTON opened on November 1, 1907. The first post office in Somerton was originally called "Hillsboro". It was renamed to "Somerton" on February 12, 1908 due to the fact that there were no other towns with that name in Yavapai County at that time. The first settler in Somerton was Sarah Jeter who arrived October 6th 1906 from Illinois. She married John Dyer and they moved into the house built by Mrs. Atherley which is still standing today within striking distance of the present day post office building on Main Street. The community had a school until 1912 when it became an agricultural center and began receiving government funding to build a more permanent schoolhouse which would serve both local citizens and mail carriers coming into town for supplies or mail deliveries during winter months. On December 10th 1912 the new schoolhouse finally opened its doors to students after many long delays caused by weather problems (including a blizzard). Classes started on January 3rd 1913 with only 7 students because of lack of funds needed for repairs to the original building which had been destroyed by fire some years earlier while being used as an animal barn! In 1916 two residents bought land adjoining what is now Main Street east of Cemetery Road and laid out a village including a church, grocery store, blacksmith shop, hotel/motel & Opera House etc., naming it SOMERTON Village after their home town just outside OF HILLSBOROUGH MAIN St., MAIN St., cemetery Rd., somerville Rd., & Hillsboro Ave.. This development included about sixty homes including twenty-eight single family dwellings total (& most were brick or frame), four churches (Methodist & Presbyterian; one each Baptist & Methodist) three schools (one public; one high school; one Agricultural School) three stores( groceries - White's Drug Store; hardware store - Saunders Hardware; bakery - Globe Bakery), four residences (two single family dwellings); one bank: First National Bank Of America And Trust Company Of Scottsdale
