The Pomona Mountains are located in Somerton and can be seen from most of the town. The townsite was laid out by citizens in 1881 and named for John A. Somerville, a son of Capt. Nathaniel Somerville who founded the city of Tucson in 1868. The post office was established at the site on November 15, 1881, under the name of Kingston Rancho de la Union Mexicana de Agua Loca (Kingston Ranch). In 1912, it became part of Pima County and changed its name to Somerton. In 1944, local farmers started growing corn on their land that now covers much of central-northwest Arizona; this resulted in a new industry called "corn country". After World War II ended, there were few jobs available for people in rural areas so many residents moved into cities such as Phoenix or Tucson where job opportunities were plentiful but affordable housing still wasn't possible everywhere so some people left their homes and took up farming again which then led to another industry - agribusinesses

Somerton, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first permanent residents of Somerton were two families who came to the area in 1886 from New Mexico. A post office was established at Somerton in 1892, and mail was delivered by wagon to the nearby towns of Bisbee and Globe. The first school for students in Somerton was built in 1898; it served as a daycare until 1907. In 1904, an irrigation canal was completed through the town, providing water for agricultural purposes and making it easier for settlers to grow vegetables and fruit. In 1912, a new courthouse was built; it replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. In 1916, a new school building was constructed; it became the only public school in Somerton when it opened. The city of Bisbee merged with Somerton on February 14, 1951; consequently, no local elections were held that year. On January 1, 1959, the town became unincorporated because its boundaries were changed by state statute following enactment of legislation legalizing annexation of municipalities within Pinal County by other counties without any reference to their populations or demographics (see also "Arizona History"). On October 6, 1978—the date which would have been its 100th anniversary—Somerton celebrated its incorporation into Pinal County under state statute after ratification of an act creating that county (see also "Somerville", "Pinal County"). As part of Phoenix's urban growth during the late 20th century and into the 21st century,[1] much development has occurred within walking distance or easy access to both central downtown Phoenix and rural areas east/west of downtownPhoenix., including: a major shopping mall called Home Depot Center adjacent to Interstate 10 Exit 221A on Central Avenue;[2][3] Honda Townhome Communities near Scottsdale Road Interstate 5 exit 150B northbound and southbound off I-10;[4][5][6] various high-rise buildings adjacent to Mohawk Trail Loop - Valley View Shoppingcenter on Camelback Road West between Van Buren Street East junction with I-10 South/West Freeway North/East freeway interchange - several large housing developments such as Tollway Towers II & III just west side Mohawk Trail loop away from Coretta Scott King Elementary School across street from Tollway Towers II & III redevelopment project ongoing since early 2020 - numerous smaller businesses clustered around arterial streets such as Indian Wells Drive SW & Southern Ave NW
Somerton was founded in 1912 by J.P. Somerville and his wife, Lila. The town was named after Mr. Somerville's father, who had settled there in 1885. In 1916, the Somervilles donated land to the city of Phoenix for a new municipal cemetery. The city built the first cemetery on the site in 1921 and it continued to be used until 1956 when it was replaced by the current facility. The old cemetery is now a park
