The community was founded in 1887 by Norwegian immigrants and their families who had come to America to escape religious persecution in their homeland. The name "Somerton" means "hilltop settlement." The first school in Somerton was opened in 1889 by Mrs. Averill Haines and her five children. In 1896, the first post office was established at Somerton by J.F. Weiler and Wm. Kappelhoffer with six mailbags delivered each way twice a week from Apache Junction on the existingStagecoach Trail network between Tucson and Phoenix. In 1902, Mr. John Coyle reopened theStagecoach Trail between Apache Junction and Phoenix as an open-air stagecoach line transporting passengers and goods overland from Tucson to Prescott via Somerville and many other towns on their route including Geronimo Springs (now Geronimo) on February 14th; Our Lady of Lourdes Basilica (now Chaplin's) at Hueneme on March 4th; Page School House near present day White Sands Missile Range; Cottonwood Spring south of present day Tombstone on April 2nd; Game Park east of present day Window Rock on April 16th – all within one week traveling time from Tucson! A post office called Beardsley opened at Somerville in 1907 by Mrs. Mary Beardsley with three mailbags per month delivered from Mesa Verde east of Phoenix via Athapascua, Bisbee, Chandler, Letoapaniagua (present day Window Rock), verification being sent back to Flagstaff Via Wells Fargo Express Mail for delivery there! In 1912 Pima County became operational when it was organized following a territorial split off from Cochise County which had been formed earlier that year due to Spanish California hostility toward Mexican rule over what would become Pima County! Mrs Gertrude Cline moved to Somerville from Goodyear after marrying John Cline there in 1916 while they both were working as drivers for Fitch Bros Trucking Company! They raised two children there: Jane (1917-2008) who married Harry Potter author JK Rowling's cousin David Barron (); RosemaryThorntonCline(1920-2009) who married broadcaster Sir Gerald Gardner (). Joan Crawford (b 1925-) also grew up here before moving away into early adulthood Due to World War II shortages of corn crops across most of North America due to rationing then MacArthur suggested growing wheat instead which led to increasing demand for water supplies thereby starting irrigation projects throughout much of central Arizona Additionally some homes were built using recycled materials such as milk crates filled with dirt or sand used for roofing or fence posts

Somerton, Arizona was founded on December 11, 1912 by Mexican American ranchers José and Lupe Gonzales. The town was named for the Somerville Ranch which they leased from the Apache Indians. In 1915, the Gonzales family sold their holdings to Harry Hutton who renamed it Hutton Valley Ranch. In 1922, Harry Hutton sold the ranch to A.F. Burnett who donated it to the University of Arizona (UA) in 1934 as a gift from his father-in-law, Prescott Bush. The university later used portions of the ranch as a research center while other parts were developed into commercial areas such as Somerton Park and Post Office Square. In 1944, after World War II ended, UA students moved back into Somerton and developed new businesses in Post Office Square before returning to their original residences in Somerton Park in 1948. The post office closed in 1984 but some remains are still visible today including a tree that served as one of the first buildings on campus. Over time, Somerton has seen many changes with its population Increasingly becoming engaged with central Phoenix through job opportunities within city limits and commuting distance to larger metropolitan areas outside of Tucson or Phoenix
