Somerton, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the county between Phoenix and Tucson. The first settlement in what is now Somerton was made by Mormon pioneers in 1847. They named their new community after the English town of Somerford in Devon, England. The Mormons left Somerville after a four-year stay to start a new community on the west side of Pinal County called Fillmore. Fillmore failed and all but five pioneers returned to Somerton in 1850. over time more settlers arrived, most of whom were farmers who operated small businesses around the village center which still stands today. In 1878 two companies of miners from Globe Colorado started work in what is now Pomona Valley Mine but quickly abandoned it due to bad water conditions and lack of available ore; this event led to many people thinking that there would be little development for them here since mining had been done elsewhere before. In 1912 an addition to present day Somerton was organized when parts of Apache Junction were annexed into Pinal County as part of an effort by then Governor PH Russell Toombs to bring growth to rural areas throughout Arizona A post office was established at Somerton on November 15th, 1912, and remained open until it closed on December 6th, 1935 A store opened at Somerville in 1916 which became known as “The Gilded Cage” because it sold everything from jewelry and cars to groceries The first school (grades one through six) opened at this location on October 1st 1916 under instruction from Mrs Jane Elledge Mrs Elledge served as first teacher until 1927 when she moved upriver with her family for a period while building a home near Mohave Lake On May 3rd 1929 Mrs Elledge opened her second school (grades seven through twelve) called First Presbyterian School which served grades one through twelve until it closed September 30th 1978 due to budget cuts After First Presbyterian School closed there never again was anything educational offered at somerville other than social activities

In order to address this issue, armies began using target practice devices known as “ skyrocket sights” in order to help aim artillery pieces at targets far away from human beings
