Sierra Vista, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 16,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Area.
Sierra Vista is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pima County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 7,811. The CDP covers an area of 2 square miles (6 km2). Sierra Vista is on the east side of Mohave County and about 20 miles north of Tucson. It is bordered to the south by the towns of Sierra Vista and Santa Rita, to the west by Nogales and Cochise counties, and to the north by 6th Avenue Baptist Church. A small community called Sahuaro Hills lies just outside the city limits of Sierra Vista on U.S. Route 520 east of Interstate 805. The first settlers in what would become Sierra Vista arrived during 1879 when cattle drives led by Lieutenant William Hance passed through Mohave County looking for new land to plant cotton. In 1880 two men named Jorgenson and Waddell purchased 4 leagues (10 acres or 3 hectares) in what would eventually become Sierra Vista from John Sayers who had leased it from Manuel Orozco de la Vega y Ruiz. The original grant included parts of present-day Forest Service land that are now within city limits while also including some areas that are now within Mohave County boundaries. In 1881 Fenton Dixon donated 160 acres (65 ha) southeast of present-day downtown Sierra Vista alongcurrent US Route 66 to create Dixon Canyon Park which still exists today as part of town's park system.. At this time there were no schools in Pima County so most people went to school in Tucson where there were also few opportunities for education beyond high school because white people controlled all aspects of life at that time. In 1882 George Stephenson donated 129 acres (51 ha), northeast from town center along current US Route 66 betweenpresent day Covina Boulevard and I-805 near Phoenix International Airport to create Stephenson Canyon Park with trails leading up into surrounding mountainsides providing Opportunity Creek with fresh water yearround.. This donation allowed for construction not onlyof a public school but also a sawmill which processed lumber available only in winter months making sure that mills stayed running year round so people could continue producing goods needed for their homes during those months without having to go outand purchase lumber during other seasons.$ $ Most residents at this time did not have accessto indoor plumbing until very recently so toiletry items like soap, toothbrush, toothpaste etc., were hand made or bought local as was laundry detergent$ In 1886 Gertrude Dodge donation adds another block NW cornerof 87th Street & Indian Wells Road bringing total NW donations upTo 194 acre(s) immediately west & southofthe Scenic Byway& off University Drivehistoric campusPinal Marches Historical District has been proposedfor designation as a National Historic LandmarkThere has been much debate over whether or not Sierra Vista should be designated as such however given its unique history it seems likelythat it will be recognized one day.$ As early as 1888 There was talk about creating a town in what would become Sierra Vista due largelyto lack of opportunity elsewhere.$ This idea never came anything further than talking until 1890 when Captain James Irvine described ideas about creatinga post office/mining colonynearbyas"A little village among these rocks." The city also built two hospitals-one for the residents and one for employees-and constructed new public buildings such as City Hall and the Sierra Vista High School. The 1920s were a time of growth for Sierra Vista as well. Businesses opened up in downtown and businesses on Third Street began to grow into what is now known as "The Strip". The opening of Interstate 10 in 1932 slowed down some of the growth but did not stop it completely. By 1945, however, Sierra Vista's population had reached 11,000 people and it continued to grow until it peaked at 15,000 in 1965 when it lost its charter to become an incorporated town
Sierra Vista is located in Pima County, Arizona. It was founded in 1879 by John Wesley Powell and his party as a base of operations for their expedition to the Grand Canyon. The town was named for Sierra Madre, anciently a grant from Spain.
