Sierra Vista is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,842 at the 2010 census. The Sierra Vista Post Office opened on November 15, 1912 and closed on December 6, 1960. It was re-established on January 3, 1961. The first post office in Sierra Vista was established at milepost #2 of the Tucson Railway tracks and operated from 1911 to 1912. The name of the original post office came from Rancho San Pedro de Atascosa, which lay just east of present-day Sierra Vista. In 1912 a new post office was built at what is now corner of Alpine Road and First Avenue NE inside the limits of present-day Sierra Vista when that community began to grow around it after being founded by ranchers near present-day Tuscon. In 1914 a store was built across First Avenue NE from what is now Cornerstone Coffee & Donuts where it remains today as one of only two businesses still in operation in town (the other being the Sierra Vista Motel). That same year saw construction begin on what would become one of downtown’s most distinctive features – the monumental Gateway Arch which stands today as a centerpiece of downtown skyline across Fourth Street NE from Convention Center NW (just south of Interstate 10) – creating an iconic image for nearby towns like Phoenix and Tucson alike. Downtown business flourished during World War I due to military base activity nearby; however following military closure in 1918 downtown declined until its revival during prohibition years when many miners relocated to downtown because there were no bars or restaurants available nearer their mines outside town limits! The Gateway Arch has been cited as an important factor leading to revitalization efforts within Downtown Sierra Vista since it functioned as a draw for shoppers who had access to not only local shopping but also gambling halls located minutes away along Interstate 10 northwest of town center – providing much needed revenue for struggling downtown businesses during prohibition times! By 1930 over 50% Of all local sales were conducted out-of-town with less than 2% coming within town limits! During this time period more than $24 million dollars worth taxable commerce occurred within city boundaries!!! Today thanks largely to continued redevelopment efforts by Town Manager/Mayor Lisa Brown & her team Downtown continues experiencing strong growth with over 350+ jobs currently employed including several high end stores & restaurants!!
Sierra Vista was founded in 1867 when the town of Prescott was founded. The original name for the town was "Mesa." In 1912, the name changed to Sierra Vista because of a donation from Mrs. Jennie A. White.
