The name Sierra Vista comes from Spanish meaning "snowy mountain". The first white settlers in what is now Sierra Vista were Mexican American soldiers who fought in the Mexican-American War and were awarded lands along the Santa Fe Trail as part of that conflict. In 1868, a group of Englishmenincluding Captain John Lathamand his son David moved to what is now Sierra Vista and started a drive down the Santa Fe Trail. By 1870 they had built a log cabin on point where Coyote Creek flows into wash around present day Sierra Vista Lake. In 1912, Don Alfredo Romero became one of America's first Hispanic millionaires when he bought 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land north of downtown Tucson for $10 per acre ($ today). He named his ranch La Posada after President James Kenedy’s Rancho El Cajon which he also purchased from Kenedy. From this property he developed several businesses such as refrigeration and distribution company El Toro Refrigerated Foods Company and later founded two other companies: Arita Enterprises (now known as Aliante Utilities) and Nevada Mining Company.
