Sierra Vista, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 46,818 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Pinal County and lies on the east side of the Colorado River. The town was founded by Levi Richardson in 1867 as a trading post on Hacienda de las Animas Creek. The first post office was established in 1870; it was moved to Sierra Vista in 1912. In 1916, San Francisco–based development company Alcan plc bought Hacienda de las Animas Creek from Richardson's heirs and laid out an area for housing and shopping around the site of what is now Sierra Vista College. In 1971, Pinal County commissioners voted to annex part of neighboring Mohave County as a result of social unrest over property values there being too high relative to average incomes here in county. The annexation created new municipalities—Sierra Vista (an incorporated community) on land annexed from Mohave County, and Paradise Valley on land annexed from Apache Junction—and until recent years they have been considered one municipality with two separate populations: residents in Sierra Vista and residents in Paradise Valley.

Sierra Vista has been home to many prominent people over the years: including Honorable John Fenton (1915-2013), who served as mayor from 1959 until his death in 2013; former Governor Janet Napolitano (D-AZ); Congressman Don Young (R-AK); pediatrician Drs. Joycelyn Elders and David Geffen (co-founder of Geffen Communications Inc.), among others
