Sierra Vista is a city in the Apache Nation Indian Reservation located in southeastern Arizona. The population was 9,307 as of the 2010 census. Sierra Vista is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first white person to live in what is now Sierra Vista was John Wesley Powell on December 16, 1868 when he and two companions journeyed from Fort Yuma up the Verde River valley to the Santa Catalina Mountains. He named his new location "Sierra Vista" after Mount Whitney, his inspiration for this expedition which also marked America's first national park. In 1886, gold was discovered at S Flagstaff and quickly became one of the most important mining towns in Arizona because it had access to both water and gold veins. lumberjacks also began to arrive in Sierra Vista during this time frame beginning with John Laughlin in 1892 who built a sawmill and millrace known as Laughlin Canyon Dam downstream from town on White Mountain Creek. This early development led to increased demand for goods brought into town by passengers on stagecoaches travelling through Tucson or Glendale which led to more businesses opening up around town while at the same time housing prices continued their steady increase which helped spur economic growth over time until they reached an all-time high around 2000 according to City Historian Dr. Donny Shelton who added that "the boomtown stereotype" has since been largely debunked due primarily to lack of documentary evidence." In 1906, when US 20 was completed between Tucson and Prescott it served as a bypass route connecting these two cities making Sierra Vista essentially independent from either one another until 1966 when US 20 became I-10 again indicating that even though its namesake valley had changed hands numerous times over its history it remained effectively urbanized albeit without any direct connection between its core communities." By 1920 there were over 100 businesses open including such names as H & H Mfg Co., J W Marriott Hotel, First National Bank (later Wells Fargo), Publix Grocery Store etc., many of whom remain today unchanged due largely to their proximity within walking distance or easy access via public transportation; however three notable establishments closed during this period namely Carson Airline Terminal (now Mesa Airport), The Desert Inn (now The Mirage) and Landmark Casino Resort - ultimately paving the way for what would become known as "modern downtown". In 1940 local rancher Harry Baugh developed Topo Chico Ranch north of town becoming one of Tucson's earliest suburbs following World War II before dying in 1951 followed by his wife Nellie who ran a grocery store next door until her death in 1984; this left behind several parcels including Topo Chico Ranch whereupon newly formed developer Richard Merrill purchased it from Nellie's son Michael Merrill in 1990 resulting in much redevelopment having commenced by 1992 withover 50% market value available currently offering residences, office space, retail shops etc.; visible infrastructure developments include a large shopping mall complete with movie theater/restaurant complex adjacent Interstate 10 south side near current day University Avenue intersection; major thoroughfare changes duringthis time have included addition of crosswalk signals at intersections along I-10/University Ave.; recent projects include demolition/replacement of popular landmark buildings such as Water droplet Chapel which operated atop Confederate Monument prior to installation of new chapel erected subsequent thereto; enlarged agricultural acreage adjacent Pima County line providing potential housing developments therein."
Sierra Vista was founded in 1868 by Hiram Bingham as a Mormon settlement on the edge of what is now Mohave County, Arizona. In 1887, it became a town and was named for Mount Whitney, an 8,000-foot peak in California. By 1912, the population had grown to 2,500 people and it was renamed Sierra Vista after a small creek that flowed through the town. The name change did not last long; by 1916, the population had dwindled to 100 people and it reverted back to its original name of Sierra Vista.
