Sierra Vista, Arizona is a city in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 26,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pima County. The current city was founded in 1912 by businessman George Waddell and educator Mrs. Adelaide Forbes as a small agricultural community on the edge of an undeveloped desert range called "The Range". The name Sierra Vista came from nearby Mount Whitney where Waddell saw snowflakes fall during his annual California trip in 1892. In 1916, Waddell founded what would become known as Southern Arizona Telephone Company and renamed the town Sierra Vista after his company's headquarter in Tucson, Arizona. In 1940,zoners approved incorporation of what would become Pima County under the name "Sierra Vista". The first post office opened in Sierra Vista on February 14th of that year. In 1951 when Tempe became their new county seat they amalgamated with Sierra Vista to form one municipality with its own mayor and council members. The current downtown area started to develop around 1960 when residents began purchasing land for residential development east of Interstate 10 near US-101 and Old Alma School Road (now State Route 66). By 1970 there were over 100 homes built here including many large ranch style homes which remain today alongState Route 66 East from I-10 to Alma School Road North . Downtown’s commercial district has grown since then with several businesses opening up such as First American Bank (founded 1959), Kipling’s Books & More (1986), Macy’s Department Store (1991) and Wells Fargo bank (1996). Today much of downtown Sierra Visita is composed of large multifamily housing developments dating back to the late 1990s/early 2000s whose designs reflect modernist principles such as open spaces between buildings units while preserving historical details common in these types of communities like exposed brick sidewalks and wide balconies

Sierra Vista is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Sierra Vista is located on the eastern edge of the Mogollon Rim National Monument and was founded in 1876 by James Fenton and his family as Fort Fenton. The town grew rapidly after it became an army post during World War II and began to be developed into a residential community by 1949. In 1957, the post office was moved from Fort Fenton to Sierra Vista and since then it has been one of its most popular destinations for tourists. The first settlers in Sierra Vista were James Fenton and his wife Martha Jane Hebard who arrived in 1876. They built a cabin on what is now Goodyear Boulevard and named their new settlement Fort Fenton after themselves. For a time, Fort Fenton served as an armament depot for General John Pershing's military forces during World War I before being turned over to the US Army in 1919. After Mexican independence from Spain was declared in 1848, many Anglo-American families fled Mexico for America due to political instability there at that time; these families settled near Tucson along with others who had followed them across the border into Arizona Territory under Ulysses S Grant's proclamation of March 15, 1864 which established Arizona Territory as part of Mexico proper following its war against American forces led by Kit Carson with help from GeneralMexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna . Most prominent among these early Californios were members of the Gold Rush era's San Gabriel Valley aristocracy such as Doniphan (the father of California Congressman Doniphan), Alva Edison (founder of Edison Electric Light Company) and fellow San Gabriel Valley native George Hearst . FortFenton gradually lost its importance until World War II when it became an army post providing security for southern Pinal County while other posts were constructed closer to Tucson pursuant to Commander Douglas MacArthur's order promulgated on December 10th 1942 while stationed at Camp Verde within Tuscon unloading supplies destined for Japan during World War II Along with numerous other towns throughout southeastern Arizona during this time period Sierra Vista experienced rapid growth due largely to military spending associated with nearby Apache Pass where construction began on two airfields dubbed "Horseshoe Bend" or "New Mesa", both serving eventual purpose as training grounds for pilots used by Air Force Special Operations Forces operating behind enemy lines during Operation Neptune Spear – also known as Operation Storm – conducted against Iraqi
