Some notable events that have occurred in or around Sierra Vista include: There have been numerous earthquakes which have caused damage both inside and outside of town; several floods which affected much of central Cochise County during wet years (1911-13, 1923-24), some devastating fires resulting in loss of life (1879 El Chihuahua Canyon fire, 1910 Prescott Valley Fire), two general elections where citizens voted on local issues (1893-94 & 1909), a couple weddings held here (1964 & 1977) while others took place at nearby towns like Winslow orerville or even Phoenixville alluding to how much importance this small community had for those days
The area now called Sierra Vista was part of the Apache Nation until 1847 when the U.S. government bought it from the Apache, giving it to General John Custer in order to keep him from joining the Mexican army. The city was named after Mount Evans, a peak in Arizona Territory. In 1867, gold was discovered in what is now Sierra Vista and business began growing quickly. A post office was established in 1870, and by 1881, there were over 100 businesses in town. The economy changed during World War II when many residents worked on Army bases around Tucson. After the war ended, Sierra Vista experienced a rapid growth period as people came to work in agriculture and manufacturing. Business owners built new homes and streets were widened as more people moved into the area. In recent years, Sierra Vista has seen a decline in its population due to high unemployment rates and increasing crime rates.
