Sierra Vista is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 61 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Sierra Vista was Manuel Garcia in 1885. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of town and named it "Sierra Vista." The name stuck and by 1918, Sierra Vista had a population of 350 people. In 1940, it had grown to 611 people when the city annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of New Mexico Colony (now part of Mesa). In 1951, when Arizona State University opened its new campus in Tempe, it required that every university student must live on campus for one year after he or she graduated from college. ASU chose to build its own dormitory on land that adjoined New Mexico Colony and so renamed the town "Sierra Vista." Until about 1970, much of what is now downtown Sierra Vista was Unincorporated Pinal County property used for agricultural purposes such as raising cattle and cotton. After county commissioners began considering ways to use more resources efficiently within their boundaries, they passed an ordinance calling for development around ASU's campus but no real progress was made until 1984 when school board member Dick Kershner spearheaded legislation creating Special District No. 2 which would allow commercial development near ASU's campus without prior approval from county commissioners

A post office was established at Sierra Vista in 1827 and remained open until it closed in 1893. The first school in Sierra Vista was established by Mrs. Fannie Furnesshaw back in 1868. The present day Sierra Vista High School opened its doors on September 8, 1907 following a $300 donation from Mrs., Jules Purdy Dodgey and her husband Alfred Gagnon Dodgey Sr.. In 1907-08 two local ranchers - Frank Hines and Harry Sisney - began construction of what would become known as "the White House". They hired local builders to commence work on a simple one story adobe building which would house their new ranch home for many years until it finally burned down around 1984-85 during thePhoenix housing bust caused by deregulation of the real estate industry brought about by then President Ronald Reaganomics policies
The first Europeans to visit the area were the Spanish explorer, Gaspar de Portolà, in 1542. The region was part of Alta California before it was granted to Mexico in 1848. In 1912, Arizona became a state and Sierra Vista became its capital.
