Sierra Vista is a small town in Arizona. It was founded in 1911 by George A. White and his family. The population was 2,070 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Mount Hood, an 8,814-foot (2,500-meter) peak located in the Rocky Mountains of North America. Sierra Vista is bordered by Apache Junction to the south and east, Yuma to the north, and Phoenix to the west. Sierra Vista's history can be traced back to when it was first settled in 1911 by George A. White and his family as part of what would become known as the Gila Bend area of Arizona. At that time, these were among the most rural areas in southern Arizona because there were no paved roads or other amenities available for those living near metropolitan Phoenix or Tucson. White built a cabin on top of Mt. Hood that served as their home until he sold it in 1949 to Edith Pogue Gardner and her husband Neil Armstrong who renamed it Sky Ranch after reaching spaceflight altitude on July 20th, 1969 - one day before Apollo 11 became an international sensation with its landing on Earth's surface! This event has been memorialized annually since then by placing a plaque outside Sky Ranch which reads: "Edgar Horman skywalked up Mount Hood on July 20th 1969" - an homage both to Mr. Armstrong and Msgr.(First Catholic Bishop of Phoenix) Gardner!
