In 1919, the United States Postal Service launched a program to make available free Winchester Repeating Arms cartridges for use by law enforcement officers. From that point on, Sierra Vista became an important center for ammunition production because of its location and access to resources. Today, Sierra Vista is home to three large ammo manufacturers- Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRA), National Center for Defense Manufacturing (NCDM) and Hornady Ammunition Corporation- which together produce over 1 million shells per week. These companies are responsible for developing new calibers of ammunition as well as manufacturing thousands of different types of projectiles used in a variety of shooting sports including hunting, target shooting and artillery fire control devices.

The first permanent settler in Sierra Vista was Manuel Antonio Sanchez on November 10, 1887. In 1912, the city of Sierra Vista was organized and it became an unincorporated community within Apache County. The city's boundaries changed again in 1959 when portions of Apache and Kingsbury counties were combined to form Arizona Rural Municipality No. 914. On July 16, 1990, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district and killed one person; this event remains the deadliest fire in Sierra Vista history. In 2000s Interstate 805 was built through rural Apache County and as a result of its routing near populated areas it attracted development and increased traffic congestion which caused residents to complain about what they saw as an environmental impact on their communities- especially when it coincided with large construction projects being undertaken by developers in neighboring towns like Phoenix or Mesa. As a result of these complaints various protests were held throughout 2001-2002 targeting I-805 which eventually led to passage of SB 1070 which targeted immigrant criminals overstaying visas
