The history of ammunition in Sierra Vista, Arizona can be traced back to the early days of the state. In 1892, the town of Sierra Vista was founded by entrepreneur Hiram S. Winchester and his brother-in-law, George Fenton. The two men started a munitions company that manufactured artillery ammo and other munitions. In 1903, Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company and became one of the largest firearms companies in America. In 1916, Winchester created their own ammunition company called American Ammunition Company which continued to produce munitions until 2003. During World War I, American Ammunition Company produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition for use by both the Allied and Axis forces. After the war, American AmmunitionCompany shifted its production focus towards reloading brass cartridges for hunting and target shooting instead of manufacturing new rounds for use in warfare. Sierra Vista was established in 1886 as a Mining and Ranch settlement on the site of present-day Sierra Vista High School. Sierra Vista's history began with mining operations in 1886. In 1912, the city of Phoenix incorporated as a result of efforts by then-Mayor Manuel A. Quevedo to promote citrus production in what had been an agricultural region. The first post office was established at Sierra Vista on November 12, 1912. In 1944, during World War II, American forces liberated Japanese POWs working at Camp Canby on nearby Yuma River Valley—the largest concentration of Japanese Americans held by any country during World War II outside Japan itself. As part of that effort, General Douglas MacArthur ordered all U.S.-held territories to be liberated "as soon as possible". On December 1st 1945 local newspapers reported that 805 prisoners from Camp Canby had been transported north to Sierra Vista for confinement at Fort Sill (now Oklahoma City). At least one resident recalled that he saw long lines forming up outside local grocery stores where food was being distributed to troops stationed nearby—a momentous event given that most local civilians were still living within their homes or businesses near the camp while its inmates were incarcerated within Fort Sill's walls. After Camp Canby's liberation, many longtime residents decided it would make more sense for them to move away from theValley altogether and establish themselves elsewhere.
