When the United States entered World War II, they knew that they needed some sort of weapon to illuminate enemy positions and battlefields. The answer was the flashlight. Firearms were not invented until 1868, so any light source available at the time could be used for illumination. However, early flashlights were crude and had no bulb or light tube. Instead, they consisted of a small lead or glass sphere that fit into an armlet or strap around your waist. These devices would project a weak spot in the darkness and were very dangerous to use as there was always the potential for them to accidentally fire. One such device was created by American inventor George Washington Carver in 1939. Carver designed a hand-held flashlight that used electricity instead of gaslight to produce light. This innovative design allowed soldiers and other emergency personnel to find their way in dark surroundings with greater accuracy. Unfortunately, this type of flashlight was not popular among civilians and only existed during World War II before being discontinued entirely in 1945. The first true assault rifle was designed by Colonel Richard Mize in 1934 and designated as the M1 Garand Rifle which featured a flip-up front sight assembly similar to those on pistols today. However, these firearms were too heavy and cumbersome for most people to carry around all day long so they were limited mainly to military use until1968 when they became available civilian handshestered rifles called Ruger Mini-14's (pictured below).
