The town was named after the low ebb and flow of the Gila River which passed through it at various points during its course. The first post office opened in 1903 and was renamed Show Low in 1907. In 1924, the first hospital opened in Show Low when Drifter Hospital became available for use by the community. In 1951, Mayor Harry Hendershot designated part of Main Street as "Mayor George W.'s Avenue" to recognize George W.'s role as an important factor in developing and maintaining the town's reputation for quality living (Hendershot City Council Minutes). In 1964, Mayor Tom Weisbord designated another portion of Main Street as "Mayor Harry's Avenue" to honor Harry Hendershot's work with development within the Town (Weisbord City Council Minutes). Today, much of downtown shows evidence of its past with brick buildings from before World War II; however most residents reside on either side of Interstate 10 which bisects downtown at right angles providing excellent access to shopping malls east or west of town while keeping all but a few businesses near residential areas that are easily walkable even during bad weather events such as hail or floods (Kirkpatrick & KirkpatrickResearch Plaza Inc.). One result of this mixture is that many businesses have migrated away from downtown over time making it difficult to accurately identify any single industry that dominates business activity within show low today (Kirkpatrick & Kirkpatrick Research Plaza Inc.). However some exceptions include being home to one major restaurant/cafeteria chain (#8 on 2016 American Community Survey) while other chains have moved into newer buildings less visible from storefront windows - including two pharmacies (#9 and #10 on 2016 American Community Survey). Overall though Downtown remains a vibrant center for retail specialties such as clothing stores (#4 overall), liquor stores (#5 overall), department stores (#6 overall), beauty shops/salon services (#7 overall) along with several high-end restaurants including Applebees Pizza ($)#1 on AZA Restaurants Top 25 list (2016)and Little Caesar’s ($)#2 on AZA Restaurants Top 25 list (2015)).

The name "Show Low" comes from the Apache Chief Manuel Fontaine'sounce that he would come to this location and trade goods with the early European settlers if they would lower their noise level so he could sleep without being disturbed. The first Europeans to visit what is now Show Low were Spanish missionaries in 1821. They called it "Chihuahua" because of its similarity to Mexico City. In 1907, writer Edward Abbey came to show his novel 'The Monkey Wrench Gang' which had been published in England and became an international best-seller. His novel tells the story of an American expatriate family living among Apaches on theranch of Cochise during World War II. When Abbey died in 1978, locals named a street after him - Abbey Road in Show Low - as part of local memorials for him and for promoting tourism hereabouts. In 1951, Arizona Governor Hiralom Palazzo hosted President Harry Truman at Sky Harbor Airport when he visited Phoenix for a state luncheon meeting before his trip to San Francisco en route to become U.S Ambassador there; during that stay Show Low became one of two towns (the other being Mesa) within 12 miles (19 km) of downtown Phoenix – making it possible for residents and visitors alike to experience all that downtown has to offer without havingto leave town limits! In fact, many businesses located within city limits began operation while Truman was president because they had property across Tyson Boulevard from Maricopa County Regional jail which served as their facility! A group of citizens led by Mayor Tom Buckley lobbied successfully for construction of a bypass constructed around present day Shea Blvd., connecting I-10/US-20 eastbound with Main Street westbound just north of University Drive serving as today's commercial district including several high end restaurants such as Benares but no services or retail developments until about 1975 when development started along Shea Blvd.- replacing much OFMARC infrastructure dating back 60 years! Today most business activity takes place near US 20/I-10 interchange just south of I-10 exit 54A minutes east from downtown Phoenix
On the evening of Saturday, October 9, 1912,[1] a severe earthquake struck the area around Show Low, Arizona. The quake was magnitude 6.3 and lasted for approximately 20 seconds.
