Show Low was founded in 1887 as a small rancher’s town, but it quickly became a prominent tourist and railroad center. In 1914, the city of Phoenix was incorporated and Show Low became its first municipal center. The city flourished until the 1930s when the area experienced a severe drought that destroyed crops and ruined homes. Today, Show Low is an operating post office with a population of about seventy-five. In 1888, Elisha Semon started developing what would eventually become Show Low. He purchased 160 acres of land east of PRESQUE ROAD on the banks of the Apache River. The site featured beautiful valley floors and waterfalls that could be seen for miles in all directions. Semon named his property after himself—Show Low—in order to draw people to his location for picnics, hikes, or just to enjoy nature at its best. By 1893, many businesses had been established in Show Low including dry goods store, hotel, bakery/cooking school, carpenter shop/shop occupied by blacksmiths from nearby Tombstone (now part of Scottsdale), dentist office (opened by Pahrump dentist Dr John Fenton), grocery store (operated by A G H & Son grocery store founders George Hammond and Charles Haggerty), tobacconist shop (owned by J B Boyd), doctor’s office (opened by Dr George Semon) and several churches: First Methodist Church opened in 1889; Baptist Church built in 1898; Presbyterian church built in 1901; Hilltop United Methodist Church opened in 1903; Fourth Street Protestant Episcopal church also built in 1903). The first train trip from Phoenix to Show Low took place on October 4th 1887 aboard the Arizona Central Railroad Company’s “Pioneer Mail” train. Passenger cars were filled with settlers who enjoyed riding downriver on this scenic route through canyons and valleys while looking out at snow-capped mountains located near Flagstaff west of Phoenix along the way. The town slowly grew as travelers arrived to explore this new locale which boasted stunning scenery including waterfalls cascading down canyon walls onto rivers below while wildflowers bloomed throughout summer months outside local restaurants serving fresh produce straight from farm fields next door! A post office was started on November 1st 1887 within one week of being open and mail was transported via horse drawn wagon between Prescott Valley Station north of Tombstone where passengers disembarked for their journey southbound along I-10 before reaching their final destination back home! On February 2nd 1888 during a severe thunderstorm which caused widespread destruction across Prescott Valley due to strong winds gusts over 100 mph some buildings caught fire resulting in loss of life: One building collapsed followed shortly thereafter by another building that housed both stores before both came crashing down into flames catastrophically incinerating all occupants inside leaving no survivors! This event is now known as “The Great Prescott Fire” which swept across much of Prescott Valley destroying entire families businesses belongings homes & effects valued at over $1 million dollars today! It remains oneOf Arizona's most tragic natural disasters ever!!
