Show Low was founded in 1912 by the Pima County Agricultural Experiment Station as a citrus orchard. The orchard was renamed Show Low in 1921, after C.F.Pritchett, its first owner and director. It was moved to its present site in 1937 and became a major production center for oranges and other crops. In 1951, it became the largest orange grower in Arizona. After World War II, Show Low's importance waned and it ceased production until 1984 when it reopened as an agricultural research center with a focus on vegetables and fruits. Today, Show Low is home to several thousand people who work at its research stations, including the University of Arizona's Joint Center for Plant Research (JCPR). The JCPR has helped change the course of Arizona history by developing new varieties of crops and studying climate change effects on crop growth; among other things. The history of show low begins with Captain Charles Floyd Payne who arrived here in 1892 looking for land where he could establish a citrus orchard while supplies lasted during the next two years of war between US forces and Mexico over control of California’s fruit supply chain
On February 14, 1912, the town of Show Low was founded on the banks of the Gila River in what is now Mexico. The name came from a low hill that dominated the village. In 1916, after the United States acquired Arizona from Mexico, Show Low became an incorporated city. On January 1, 1920, it became part of Tucson.
