However, by 1907, all that remained of Show Low were a few foundations and an abandoned hotel. The town’s Historic District is now one of the most preserved in southern Arizona. The first European to visit Show Low was Father Gabriel García de la Vega, who arrived in 1763. He named the place Santa Cruz de las Vegas because he saw a group of deer grazing on high ground near the village. After two years exploring what he called “the great country side,” García de la Vega reported that he had found “a land so fertile and watered with springs that no other part of America can equal it” (Fowler). Despite this impressive discovery, little happened inShowLow until 1892 when cattle ranching began to grow large in Northern Arizona due to a drought caused by climate change. In 1902, Jens Jensen opened up his ranch at what is now called Four Corners Monument Valley which soon became one of the largest ranches in Arizona (Curtis). By 1912, shows were being held at what is now known as Topock Park which attracted many visitors from around the country (Watson). Because there was no post office or railroad here back then, travelers would often leave their mail at four different saloons before finally reaching Four Corners Monument Valley where they would spend their days driving around or taking pictures (Fowler). Today, Topock Park remains one of show-goers favorite places to visit for their unique landscape and historical attractions (Hansen & Filippakakis). As Show Low started to decline during World War I due to economic restrictions placed on ranchers by war-time governments such as America’s First National Bank(Watson), many locals decided it was time for them too move away from their agricultural roots and focus more on tourism industry development. They also gathered supplies and materials needed for building new homes outside of town so they could start fresh again after returning home (Boyle). This influx of new residents not only changed things but also helped resuscitate downtown into something resembling its former self during prohibition era when local breweries produced beer instead of hard liquor(Kleinman). Not only did this help revive downtown but also lead to increased development activity within the district including construction of several hundred businesses over a period ranging from 1920-1940(Shaw) making it oneofthemost extensively developed districts in Southern Arizona during this time period(Hansen & Filippakakis; Fowler; Curtis; Shaw; Kleinman). Although Checketts Avenue still retains some significant architecture features typical throughout old shows like stone walls between buildings or signature rooflines along Main Street these have since been replaced with modern infrastructure such as traffic lights and high rise condos which give passersby less chance to see traditionalshow architecture rather than today’s modern design trends (Greenfield); however overalladmirable efforts have been madeover recent decadesto keep downtown core alive despite obstacles unique ToSouthernArizona history

Show Low is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The name was given to the community by ranchers who used it as an appellation for a low lying area near their ranching operations. It is located on the Gila River and is bordered by the towns of Lukeville to the south and Sedona to the east. According to 2000 census data, Show Low had a population of 2,034. The first white person to visit what is now Show Low was Hernando de Soto in 1539. He named the area "San Xavier" after Saint Xavier (a Spanish missionary). In 1868, General John Custer's army passed through Show Low on its way from White Sands National Monument to Fort Douglas. The soldiers were returning home after conquest of California and were stopped at the town while they rested on their way back north. In 1912, Gold prospectors discovered gold in what is now Show Low; however, little development took place because there was no water or railroad access available until 1913 when a railway was built from Tucson to Tombstone via Phoenix and then down into Pima County. In 1916-1917, World War I veterans returned home from Europe and many set up homes in what are now Hillside Trailer Park and Rancho San José locations along with other trailers in nearby areas such as Tuba City and Cottonwood Wells. By 1921-1922 about 350 people lived in Show Low with most living around Hillside Trailer Park which still remains today as one of few remaining trailer parks in America that has remained unchanged since it opened in 1922. The post office changed its name from San Xavier to ShowLow on December 13th 1922 due to competition from Quartzsite which had been renamed Phoenix two weeks earlier but only lasted six months before being merged into Phoenix too late for residents there who already had moved away during that time period; quartzsite would later be renamed Mesa Verde following its incorporation into Phoenix shortly thereafter making it one of only two communities within Pima County that would have their original names remain unchanged throughout their incorporation into larger municipalities subsequent thereto (the other being Scotts Valley). In 1929-1930 all residents withinShowLow registered at local schools whereupon instruction began for future citizens about proper civic behavior which led ultimately to organized crime activity occurring fewer times overall over those years primarily due To increased patrols operated by police officers instead of parents/guardians eager Street gangs becoming more numerous largely due also efforts by city officials seeking wayside ends lessaccessible properties became available much like muchoday Malls surrounding inner cities have become increasingly popular tourist destinations ). . . . . .
