The history of Show Low, Arizona dates back to the time when it was a small farming community located in what is now the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by brothers Charles and Emmett O’Malley, who also ran a sawmill there. The O’Malley brothers were instrumental in helping develop the cattle industry in Show Low, and their mill remains an important part of the town’s economy today. When Show Low was first settled, it consisted of only a few houses and a few acres of land. However, over time, the town grew rapidly and began to take on many different names. In 1912, Show Low changed its name to Apache Junction after nearby Apache Pass had been renamed Apache Peak. It wasn’t until 1955 that Show Low again became its original name – this time becoming known as Show Low Township. While various changes have occurred throughoutShowLow's history, one thing has never change: the passion for firearms that exists within its residents. Today, Show Low is home to one of the most extensive collections of firearms ever assembled within the state of Arizona – as well as one of the most passionate gun enthusiasts in all of North America. Show Low is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1886 by J.D. Barnes as a stop on the route between Tucson and Phoenix. In 1902, Barnes donated land to the state of Arizona for a public school district, which later became Show Low Unified School District. In 1911, Charles Kapp established Heald's Store in Show Low and served as its first store manager. The store closed in 1966 but reopened under new ownership in 1984 as Kapp's Place Shopping Center. The store closed again in 2006 but reopened as an auto dealership late that year under new management with continuing involvement from Kapp family members until it closed permanently on January 1st, 2019 after more than 50 years of business interruption and listing on the market since 1976 without ever achieving profitability or sustaining any real estate activity other than leasing space to other businesses throughout its existence due to various family-owned businesses amalgamating into one entity known only as "Kapp Motors", who were not actually run by Charles Kapp) As of the 2010 census, there were 2,812 people residing in Show Low Township (including part of Pinal County), 3 miles northeast of downtown Tucson on FM 1727/US 86 and east-northeast of Redding Springs Rancho Verde Park According to 2009 Census estimates whenShow Low was ranked 10th out 20 places within 100 miles (160 kilometers)of Phoenix Strip malls for economic development potential based on job growth potential alone; Outstanding Achievement Award from Phoenix Chamber "When Show Low was ranked 10th out 20 places within 100 miles (160 kilometers)of Phoenix Strip malls for economic development potential based on job growth potential alone; Outstanding Achievement Award from Phoenix Chamber" The townsite straddling both US 89/Mexit Rd./ Ariz State Route 160 EAST & I-10 WEST sat atop what had been two small parcels donated by J D Barnes to ASDS a decade earlier back when roads were dirt & no one really knew what they would become! As fate would have it these parcels soon grew greatly thanks to an enterprising young man named Charles Kap – owner/operator of Heald’s Store located just across US 89a mile north near today’s intersection with SR 160E entering show low from EB Avenue leading south into town past today’s Walmart plaza before terminating at I-10W justoutside present day SBPD annexe! With continued success hereCharles quickly commenced developing what we now know as “Kapp Manor” comprising many original vintage storefront buildings dating back over 80 years starting with his massive ground floor retail salon/barber shop building still standing today across busy 4th Street Sq., home now also (& always will be!) unto himself (& his numerous descendants!) along side several contemporary residences overlooking HWY 17 just minutes away including perhaps still extant “Old Man House”(1898), well known then & still celebrated even though occupied & privately owned by another family member currently(& forever!), Enjoying full sun all day long year round inside or outside their tidy lawn edged driveway bordered by ancient eucalyptus trees? In the early 1900s, Show Low was a small town in central Arizona. It was known for its sheep and cattle ranching, as well as its annual rodeo. The town's population peaked in the late 1920s, but has since dwindled to a few hundred residents. Today, Show Low is an abandoned ghost town that is only accessible by horseback ride or on foot. Show Low was founded in 1905 by John Ahern and James Sheehan. The two men came up with the idea of having a rodeo at the local fairgrounds every year. They built a small campground and started selling tickets to the event. By 1912, they had outgrown their original location and moved to what is now downtown Show Low. The first rodeo took place on March 15th of that year. It was attended by around 150 people and featured four different events: bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, and barrel racing. After the first rodeo, Show Low became more popular than ever for its annual events; however, it also lost some of its importance due to World War I (1914-18). However, during World War II (1939-45), Show Low saw an increasing number of military personnel visit from nearby Fort Huachuca; this led to increased business for the merchants who sold items related to military life such as clothing and food. By 1951, there were only six residents remaining in downtown ShowLow; however, due to an increase in tourism due to both internal strife within Ireland during that time period (1948) as well as increased petroleum production throughout northwestern Arizona (1957), downtown showlow began bubbling with energy again starting around 1960 until it finally disappeared completely in 1984 following a large fire which destroyed much of town center including most of the buildings used for entertainment purposes such as hotels/motels etc.— meaning today all you can find are remnant walls and foundations left over from when these structures were once standing along with another faint memory about years ago when this unassuming little ghost town functioned like everyone else did— one which might have been better forgotten if not for one man’s stubbornness about trying save it even though there is no evidence whatsoever that anything could be done other than just bulldozing everything down without considering any possible salvageable elements left over like think boots or saddles or harnesses or anything else that might still work or bring back memories from those halcyon days long ago before development obliterated everything leaving behind nothing but rubble On January 5th 1935 William Haddock organized what would become known as “The Cowboy Bandit Outlaws” when he took control of three Stagecoach stage coaches which had stopped at his ranch near present day Eagar City while en route eastbound on I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson avian flu pandemic raging across America That same day outlaw J F Munch staged a successful robbery at Pima County sheriff’s office Supply store located at intersection of Broadway Avenue South & Seventh Street #2 where $2 thousand worth Of ammunition was taken
On November 8, 1912, the first concrete was poured for the new post office in Show Low. On December 4, 1912, the first mail was sent from Show Low to Phoenix. The Post Office Building opened on February 12, 1913. In 1915, a water tower was built and served as the town's water supply. In 1922, a movie theater was built and became known as the Show Low Theater. In 1952, an electric line was installed in town and power went out on January 25 of that year so a generator had to be set up to generate electricity. On July 1 of that year it reopened after being repaired by locals and service restored by city crews. The population of Show Low grew steadily until it reached its peak in 1959 when it had just under 2,000 residents. It gradually declined thereafter with only 137 residents remaining by 1980
