showslow.az is a census-designated place in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. Showslow started as a small settlement on what is now the east side of Interstate 20 in 1907 when cowboy and miner John Denton set up a homestead there. By 1915, it had grown to a town with a Post office and seven businesses including two hotels and three stores. In 1925, Showslow incorporated as a village under the name "Navajo" but changed it to "Showslow" in honor of then-Governor Hiram Johnson because he favored that name for an Indian reservation near Shreveport, Louisiana. During World War II, Show Low became one of several Arizona towns that were located on military bases; during the war it produced munitions for the war effort and also served as an airfield for fighter planes used by the Army Air Forces. The post office closed in 1951; however, local residents continued to use the name until 1957 when they adopted "Show Low", which was chosen due to its similarity to both Navajo and low (in elevation) mountains nearby within Pima County boundaries. In 1970, Show Low became home to Shriners Hospital after being acquired by that organization from Arita Clinic; at that time it was one of only four hospitals in Arizona managed by Shriners Hospitals Corporation (the others being Phoenix General Hospital, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Scottsdale Community Hospital). In 1984–1985 show low received state approval for cityhood; on September 17th 1985 incorporation papers were filed with Pima County Clerk's Office setting forth details about operations for City Hall staff (including nine members), streetlights/street names (West First Street through North First Street), water service (City Water), sewer service (Shriners Sewerage District #2) and trash pickup (Trash Service). On November 1st 1990 City Council approved amendments submitted by Mayor Emanuel Epps specifying services provided by Parks Department such as public restrooms etc., fire department including suppression training exercises potential bldgs./facilities needed etc., annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas west of I-20 which included much agricultural land; these annexations are still ongoing today with final stages currently proceeding along East Second Avenue between South Valley Road & North Next Street

When the city moved to its current location in 1928, it was on high ground and had access to all of the resources that were available in downtown Phoenix.
