In 1899, the community of Show Low was founded in central Arizona by John S. Ketchum and his wife, Hilda. The name "Show Low" is derived from the Spanish words "shelado" meaning dried or parched and low, as in alow cost store. Ketchum had been looking for a new home for his cattle and sheep after moving to Tucson from New Mexico two years earlier. In 1898 he had purchased 2,500 acres of land at what is now the corner of Pima and Roosevelt Roads in central Arizona. He named the property Show Low because it was so low on hills that horses could not stand up to look down on it. The town grew quickly around Ketchum's Store, school, hotel, post office and other businesses. By 1900 there were over 100 people living in Show Low. In 1912,Arizona became part of Mexico when President Porfirio Diaz signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which recognized Mexican independence from Spain. As a result, many Arizonans decided to stay in their homes rather than leave their loved ones behind in Mexico City. This led to the growth of Show Low into an agricultural center with towering crops such as wheat and cotton fields plus small stores and businesses catering to individual farmers and ranchers alike. During World War II much of Central Arizona was occupied by Japan during its Battle of Midway campaign which began on June 8th 1941and lasted until September 6th 1945when Japan capitulated unconditionally at sea). Many local Arizonans volunteered for military service including many who went into battle wearing masks that covered their noses and mouths since breathingomics were unknown then (Norfolk Islander George Aultman served as a medic during World War II). After the war ended many Arizonans returned home but some chose to remain in Japan where they continued working odd jobs or joining militaries abroad during its occupation period (such as Hirohito's personal physician Dr Yoshijiro Mori).
