Hurtz became one of the earliest dealers in Arizona of both black powder and percussion cap ammo. His shop was known for its quality products and service as well as its unrivaled prices for ammunition. In 1929, Johnnie Mae Brown opened her own firearms shop on State Route 66 just east of Interstate 10 near Carefree Skies airport. This business was initially called "The Pistol Place." Ammo sales at this store increased rapidly due to its reputation for quality merchandise along with its low prices for handgun ammo and rifle ammo. Arizona's Show Low is a small town located in Mohave County, Arizona. The town was founded in 1907 by the Arapaho people, and it became a US Post Office in 1912. The population of Show Low decreased from its peak of over 500 residents in the early 1920s to just seventy-five residents by 1940. However, the community's fortunes changed after World War II when oil wells were discovered near the town. As production increased, Show Low began to grow as an agricultural center and attracted hundreds of workers for local farms. By 1970, however, less than twenty-five residents remained in the town. Today, only a few homes remain standing in what was once a thriving small town.
In 1882, the city of Phoenix was founded by Augustus Graham. The first permanent structures in the area were a small adobe jail and courthouse. In 1886, the Arizona Territorial Legislature created what is now called the City of Phoenix with an initial population of just over 20 people. The City of Phoenix grew rapidly, reaching its peak in 1912 when it had a population of 400. However, as immigration increased and poverty increased, the city's population began to decline until it reached its low point in 1930 when it had only 100 residents. Phoenix experienced another growth spurt during World War II as the city became one of America's largest military staging areas. The war also brought new jobs and housing to Phoenix; however, by 1949 there were only 30 residents remaining in the city limits. The last time that Phoenix had any significant growth was during the late 1990s when they enjoyed a period of high-poverty rates and joblessness due to a recession which hit most major cities hard at that time. However, starting in 2000Phoenix started to experience some modest growth again as developers erected new apartment buildings and businesses reopened after being closed for various reasons such as bankruptcy or redevelopment projects (such as light rail). As recently as 2013Phoenix still has lower than average population density due to their large build up from recent decades plus ongoing efforts by Mayor Greg Stanton (D) to reduce gun violence withincity limits
