Fremont and the Navajo people to sell them land east of the Gila River for grazing purposes. The name probably originated from the word "sedna" meaning "place where water collect." The townsite was platted in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and James Fenton under the name of Prescott. In 1911, Prescott merged with nearby White Sands to form Sedona as a separate municipality. On December 12, 1912, Mayor George Waddell dedicated a new park named after him called Waddell Park in honor of his commitment to Sedona's growth as well as his efforts to improve public transportation within the city limits during this time period while also promoting education within the community. The post office at Sedona opened on February 14, 1893 under mail order from Cincinnati, Ohio and continued operation until it closed on November 30th 1970 due to heavy firefighting by firefighters throughout Phoenix during that year's blizzard conditions which affected much of North America with little or no warning given to residents let alone plans for closures or evacuations that took place near Phoenix only days before those events occurred; one such event which remains unique today is when National Guard troops were called out to help clear streets in downtownPhoenix immediately following what would become known as "the night of October 28th" which ultimately led to over 1 million people remaining without power across most parts of North America that day including many portions of Phoenix; all this prior planning and preparation went into effect mere hours beforehand when funnel-like winds suddenly shaped themselves into what would become known as "The Day Of The Winds" which would result in extensive damage both physically and emotionally throughout much of central Phoenix resulting not just from high winds but also significant flooding including entire neighborhoods being destroyed (eftAve Street & Buckeye Rd) leaving thousands homeless once againoenix had experienced its largest natural disaster ever!
