During World War II, local farmers starting mounting rifles on trees near their homes for target practice. After the war, some farmers decided to put telescopes on their farmhouses as well. In 1963, Dr. Don Heineman purchased an 8-inch reflector telescope from a veteran Air Force officer who had served during WWII as an ordnance sergeant at bomber base at nearby RAF Seagull Point. Dr. Heineman put his new telescope up on top of his home’s roof where it remained until moving it down to its current location inside Sedona’s Natural History Museum in 2002 when it became part of the museum’s collection along with several other historical items such as a 15-foot old redwood mastodon skeleton used by prehistorian Arthur Conan Doyle for scenes in “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” (1892). With more than 140 years of history behind it, scope mounts are still being used today in Sedona for viewing astronomy and nature activity alike!
