Sedona, Arizona is a small town located in Sedona County, Arizona on the southeast side of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix–Mesa–Scottsdale, AZ Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Sedona area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and has sites such as Pinnacle Rock and Red Rock Canyon that are well-known for their red rocks and canyon views. The first European to visit the area was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1769. In 1875, gold was discovered near Sedona by Elisha Sutter and his men who named it after Saint Edward's Abbey in England where he had been born. The mining industry began in earnest around 1880 andsedony became a thriving city with an estimated 50 businesses active by 1900. However, World War I interrupted production and during the 1920s most of what remains of the mining industry closed down due to competition from other industries including agriculture which replaced metal mining throughout much of North America during this time period. During World War II there were heavy military presence in Sedona thanks to General George Smedley Butler who made it one of his primary goals to keep American troops stationed in nearby Flagstaff so that they could be available for operations in central Arizona should any hostilities erupt there. He also built several large housing developments which remain today as some of Flagstaff's most popular tourist attractions such as Belleair Drive (now called Indian School Road) or Soldier Field Park which features a large statue representing all aspects of military service from WWI through WWII – both inside/outside & male/female (and sometimes baby). During World War II many local residents left town because they feared Japanese aggression but returned shortly before Pearl Harbor when things calmed down nationally. Afterward many people chose not to return because conditions were much improved overall than they experienced during those wartime years although some may have done so out of nostalgia or simply out choice rather then having to fight for their homes again should something happen here again like another war come along later on without warning or notice unlike recent times when things have just kindof happened without anyone really trying to make anything happen about it….. In 1957 Sedona was selected as one of twelve communities nationwide chosen to become part of the newly created Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSOA). This new region included all four aforementioned metro areas plus Surprise Valley and numerous others throughout Arizona within its boundaries including Scottsdale and Chandler Counties adjacent thereto; Peoria County between Tempe and Phoenix; Maricopa County eastward into Apache Junction; Navajo Nation eastward into Window Rock; Jerome County northward into Mohave County; Yuma County westward into Apache Junction etc.). WhilePhoenix-Mesa-Scottendale still technically falls within MSA boundaries even though it constitutes only about 12% thereof its population exceeds 100,000 people making it one helluva small town! With 1,902 residents as reported at the 2010 census alone Sedona enjoyed every bit if its inclusion within MSOA status while experiencing infrastructure improvements & growth potential never before seen outsidePhoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale especially given how relatively small & isolated its downtown core truly is! And while we’re on topic…………………. Today almost everything you might want or need - groceries store chains like Safeway(national), Kroger(local), Walmart(international), Target(local); doctor’s offices (mayonnaise free!), pharmacies (!); massages (& chiropractors!), tattoo parlors (& artists!), hair salons (& beauty products!), dentists (& oral hygiene products!), golf courses (!); wines ($$$$!)………all right up there with national fast food chains places like McDonald’s($], Wendy’s($$), Burger King($$)), Pizza Hut($]), Dunkin Donuts ($)……….just about everything else you can think Of actually! And don't forget air conditioning………………………..freakin' amazing considering how hot it gets hereabouts!
