Sedona, Arizona is located in the Apache Junction area of southeastern Arizona. The town was founded in 1868 by Mormon pioneers who came from Utah. It became a popular tourist destination after being chosen as the site for the first U.S. military base, Fort Sill, in 1907. The town's nickname "The Gunner's Village" comes from its many gunsmiths and ammunition dealers which helped make Sedona a popular shooting spot throughout the 1800s and into the 1920s. The name "Sedona" originated with Arthur Cushing who first used it as an unappreciated descriptive term for what he considered to be an ideal location for his cattle ranchenterprise called Hualhaut Mesa (later renamed Gila National Forest). In 1935–36, when Sedona's population reached 10,000 residents—the largest until 1959—city hall was moved from downtown to Park Boulevard near Kipling Golf Course so that more inhabitants could use the facilities available within easy walking distance including movie theaters, libraries, grocery stores and services such as water service and waste disposal combined with nightlife opportunities typical of major American cities during that time period such as dancing at local dance halls or shows at local Legionnaires' hospitals during World War I thanks to munitions production going on adjacent parkland then being developed into Mohave National Forest through donation by Drs.
